course The pair was W S Kilmers gallant old gelding Exterminator and the Hamocas Stables Mad Hatter The public backed both with equal favor and the pair went to the post with even money laid against each to win Cirrus the second string of the HildrethRancoeas entry was not seriously considered The only rac ¬ ing figures in calculation were Exterminator and Mad Hatter At times during the betting Exter ¬ minators rose to 0 to 5 and at others 11 to 10 could have been bet against Mad Hrftter All in all the speculative favor was Mad Hatter HatterWill Will McDnniel intrusted Albert Johnson the good Russcter stable jockey with the riding care of Exterminator and Sam Hildreths fine rider Earl Sande was on Mad Hatter The start was perfect Mad Hatter taking the lead at once with Ex ¬ terminator after him and Cirrus third So they ran openly for five and a half furlongs At the half mile ground Johnson called on Exterminator and he closed on the leader on the outside and the pair raced around the turn on even terms Entering the stretch the old horse was in front and gaining and at the eighth post Exterminator was almost clear clearMad Mad Hatter would not be denied however and drew up again He was at the inside rail and Exterminator closely at his outside Below the six ¬ teenth post it was seen that Exterminator would win Mad Hatter was in close quarters and Sande smartly seemed to protest thereat conveying ths impression to the stand that Exterminator had hampered Mad Hatter So the pair came to i fin ¬ ish both driving hard and Exterminator drawing nearly clear past the winning post postThe The crowd was in a frenzy and its roar did not quiet until Sandes claim of foul had been cor ¬ rectly disallowed ami the result announced Then the cheers broke loose and shook the stands Tins race deserved all tribute The stewards decision was supported by the tes ¬ timony behind expert eyes which closely watched the contest It will be many a day before a better contest of horses is seen on any racing ground Exterminators time 150 knocked a second and a fiftli off his own Jamaica track record of 151 made under 110 pounds last June JuneCEOWD CEOWD NUMBERS 20000 20000There There
