Y., June 7. — Mad Play, running the race that Sam Hildreth has expected of him all spring, was winner of the mile and three-eighths of the historic Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park Saturday afternoon before one of the largest and most representative gatherings that ever assembled on the Nassau County track. The race was worth 2,880 to the winner. Two lengths back of the son of Fair Play and Madcap came H. C. Fishers Mr. Mutt, just beating Edward B. McLeans Modest for second place. Bradleys Beau Butler, Lee Rosenbergs Sun Pal, Harry Payne "Whitneys Klondyke, Frank Taylors Abu Ben Ahdem, an added starter, and Samaritan, from the Sanford Stud Farm Stable, was last. The day was ideal for the big race and, while the going was not at its best, the track was good. The field was an exceptionally large one for the Belmont Stakes and it was a truly run race.
