FIFTY-THIRD RUNNING OF KENTUCKY DERBY I ♦ . , Review of the Candidates for Americas Most Popular Horse Race — — ♦ Presentation of Racing Credentials of All Eligi- bles, the First Group Appearing in This Edition — Second Follows Tomorrow e • The Kentucky Derby will be run at Churchill Downs, Louisville, Ky., Saturday, May 14. A grand total of 1G2 entries were received for the fifty-third renewal of this now internationally famous race. Since the publication of nominations two of the horses named have died, Mormask and Moramine, both owned by Benjamin Block of New York, who won the Derby with Morvich, the daddy of the deceased colts. The history of the Kentucky Derby, the glamour and fame, the growth and popularity of the greatest of present day American stake races, are in a general way known to the admirers of the thoroughbred and the fascinating sport of racing. It is not, at this time, the purpose of Daily Racing Form to delve into details of the fifty-two runnings of the Derby nor recant the glories and romances interwoven with its annual decision at historical Churchill Downs, all that for a later date. The chief interest now lies in the prospective candidates for this years renewal. In order to present to its readers a complete and thorough review of the racing credentials of each and every eligible for the Derby, it will be necessary to divide the list of entries into two parts. The first division appears in this edition of Daily Racing Form, the second will follow tomorrow. Todays review includes seventy-one horses, beginning with Abul Fath and ending with Kentucky II., arranged in alphabetical order. FAIKSIAK All but Court Lady, Charger, Flying Jib Boom, Flambino, Gravita, and James Stuart have started in one or more races. The horses in this group, which started, but did not win as yet, maidens in racing parlance, include Belgenland, Bocaratone, Bucephalus, Beggar Boy, Duelist, Filemaker, Holy Friar, and John William II. It might be well to call attention to the fact that Sir Barton was a "maiden" when he won the Kentucky Derby. The most prominent eligibles in the first group are Boo, Black Panther, Candy Queen, Fair Star, Fred Jr., Justice F., Jopagan and Kentucky II. Fair Star was the leading winning two-year-old of 1920 and may be destined for even greater success this year. Candy Queen was another smashing good filly among the two-year-olds of last year, small but game and every inch a race horse. Boo, Justice F. and Fred Jr. were winter developments which established excellent reputations at New Orleans and Tijuana that have kept them in the public limelight for a considerable time. Such as Bostonian, Biiiey M. C, Brown Bud, Cheops, Candy Blackbird. Dolan, Enthusiastic Edward, General Haldeman and General Lee, are candidates deserving careful consideration. It is from just such a list the unexpected winner comes when the favorites fail. There is no intention to attempt any forecast of even the names of the horses that may start, much less to arouse the angry wrath of the goddess of fickle fortune by being so bold as to try to pick the probable winner. Here are, however, all the pertinent facts known concerning the racing qualifications of the various Derby candidates appearing in the first group. Not only are the Past Performances of each and every candidate shown, but a recapitulation of the salient points in their racing careers pointed out briefly and concisely as an aid to the student of form in arriving at his conclusions. First in order are presented the tabulated records of the horses in the first group, showing the number of starts, how many times first, second, third and .Continued on ttiiril page. The breeding of the thoroughbred is no haphazard theory unsupported by facts, but rather an industry of immense proportions and importance in nearly all the great countries of the world, that leares nothing to chance, but is the result of long years of study, experiment and careful analysis. A glance over the blood lines of the more important Derby candidates appearing in the first division, reveals that, so far as heredity is concerned, there is nothing lacking.
