SHIVA, away well and allowed to settle into stride, worked his way into the lead in the first quarter, drew avay entering the stretch and won easily thereafter. STRATHCONA began fast, saved ground while racing in closest pursuit of the leader and tired but outstayed CERVEZA. The latter worked his way up gradually on the inside in the stretch. LAPIDARY, quickest to start but unable to accept the advantage, lost ground and tired in the final stages. WAR TIDE lost much ground. JUNGLE BOY raced green. AD-SUM was outrun. SPRINGSTEEL began slowlv, raced green and was always far back. MARTIE FLYNN, never far back and under vigorous urging throughout, worked his way clear with a rush after reaching the stretch and, holding on well, withstood GRACIOUS GIFT, pulling up sore. The latter, probably best and blocked in the first quarter, lost much ground when improving his position and closed fast. GERARD, unable to keep up, closed ground after going to the outside in the stretch. CROFTON lost ground on the first turn, forced the earlv pace under hustling tactics and tired in the final drive. JACK HOWE quit. ANTE BELLUM began fast, but was weakly ridden. AT SUNRISE, easily best and away fast, was taken back slightly near the turn, readily supplanted VIXEN LASSIE in the lead and. shaking off PRINCESS CAMELIA and PRINCESS NANCY, was not thr?at-ened by MARCASITE. The latter began slowly, worked her way up on the outside and tired in the last seventy yards, but outfinished PRINCESS CAMELIA. The latter rushed up fast on the turn and tired after making a mild challenge. MISS CORRINE held on fairly well. PRINCESS NANCY quit. VIXEN LASSIE was done after showing speed to the stretch. WENT TO POST— 3:58. AT POST— 7 minutes. Start good out of machine. Won driving: second and third the same. DARK ENTRY began fast, set a fast early pace under good rating and, continuing well under strong riding, withstood the challenge of PORT HARLEM and outstayed ELYSIUM. The latter began sluggishly and remained far back for the first half mile, worked his way up gradually with a saving of ground and closed strongest of all. PORT HARLEM followed closely under light restraint for five eighths, went resolutely when hard urged and gave way to ELYSIUM in the final stages. MODERATION, close up throughout, lost ground and showed a good performance. MUCKER, close up, saved ground and tired. FAIR ROSALIND had no mishaps. BAGGAGE MAID, much used at the start, was on the outside throughout. The latter met interference shortly after the start, saved ground on the turn, where he was briskly shaken up, continued with fine courage in the closing quarter and worked out a mde in 1:38*£. SUNNY LASSIE began slowly, raced very wide and closed gamely in a fine performance. PRINCE DAMOUR showed good speed, saved ground and tired after five eighths. ANNAPOLITAN closed gamely MARTHA JONES swerved shortly after the start, causing crowding and tired after showing speed to the final quarter. INSCO broke down when moving up fast on the turn. THE SOUTHERNER, taken into the lead, set the early pace under restraint, quickly increased his margin entering the stretch and, holding on well when challenged, outfinished IRENE T. The latter, racing improved, began slowly and remained a good distance back in the first half mile, improved his position on the inside to the final eighth, where she headed the winner after coming to the outside, but tired in the final strides. OUR PAL began slowly, raced wide and showed a good performance. SILVER SCEPTER saved much ground and had no mishaps. STAR PLAY quit. RIFF RAFF, close up from the start, tired. FRENCH LANE began fast, showed good speed under energetic riding and tired after a mile. NURSIE raced wide most of the way. SEARINGTON came through on the inside in the stretch with a rush, moved up, then tired. DEVON was outrun. KEITH had I early speed. WIZARDRY was always far back.
