NAMES OF COLONEL WINN AND DERBY SYNONYMOUS LOUISVILLE Ky May 4 The Kentucky Derby which excites the imaginative and commands the interest of racing fans all over the World owes its popularity and suc ¬ cess to the untiring efforts of practically one man Col Matt J Winn a native of Louisville now in his seventyfourth year The names Kentucky Derby and Col Winn have been synonymous for years and where one is mentioned the other invariably is an aside with it itEver Ever since he first became an official of the Louisville Jockey Club as vice president in 1902 Colonel Winn has worked assidu ¬ ously to popularize the Derby He devel ¬ oped the classic from a four or five thou ¬ sand dollar horse race to a 50000 extrava ¬ ganza and it was with some misgivings that he was forced by economic conditions to reduce the added money this year to 30000 30000Colonel Colonel Winn also so publicized the Derby that 50000 or more racing devotees from all over the country now see the race each year where a mere handful by comparison wit ¬ nessed infancyColonel the spectacle in its infancy Colonel Winn now executive director of Churchill Downs will be in his private box tomorrow to see the fruit of his labors in the running of the sixtieth Kentucky Derby He has seen them all and each year he has the satisfaction of knowing the race is be ¬ coming more and more popular popularThe The genial Mr Winn still likes to recall his watching the first Derby from a tree top outside the track Then at the age of four ¬ teen years he must have dreamed of the day when the Derby would be his cherished pet
