COLONEL MELUS, well handled, and saved when outrun, responded fast over the first half mile, drew clear entering the stretch, but tired fast in the last stages. DEREK, well up from the start, was put to strong urging in the drive and was wearing down the winner at the end. ROYAL ROVER, unable to improve his early position under strong pressure, made up ground in the drive. HANDSOME HAL moved up with a rush after three,-eighths, raced wide thereafter and tired in the last eighth. WATCH IN came to the inside for the drive and closed with a rush. DARK DEVIL, a strong factor from the start, tired in the last stages. HEAVY SUGAR, well up from the start, was shuffled back at the far turn, lost ground thereafter and finished well. The latter sprinted into a good lead in the opening three-eighths, gave way momentarily after reaching the stretch, came again, but tired fast in the final sixteenth. DARKEST HOUR lost ground throughout, but held on well. EXCITATION, permitted to drop out ofcontention, responded fast after reaching the stretch and closed with a rush. GULFELANO showed little. The latter improved his position rapidly after three-eighths, responded well in the stretch, failed to menace the winner, but was much the best of the others. LADY LA MARNE, shuffled back when PACHECO bore over at the lower turn, was jent to the outside when racing forwardly and held on well. INDIAN BOY, beginning fast but ourtun, improved his position after five-eighths, but tired in the drive. PACHECO came over sharply at the lower turn and tired after improving his position.
