AMERICAS GREATEST RACE LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 6.— There may be races richer in value, and even thoroughbred contests that ante-date the Kentucky Derby, but there is no contest of speed and endurance engaging" thoroughbreds on the Western Hemisphere that abounds with the in-j terest and tradition of the Churchill Downs spectacle. Enhancing in interest each subsequent year, commanding the attention of the uni-j verse one Saturday in May of each year, the Kentucky Derby has been such virtually from its inception back in 1875. As far back as 1893, musty and dust laden newspaper files bear accounts of an attendance of 25,000 persons. That was for the nineteenth running of the Kentucky Derby, and now the sixty-fifth chapter of the race has attracted three times that number while millions sit tensely by radios to await the news of the famous contest.
