BALTEE LEADS ORCUS TO WIRE AT DETROIT DETROITBurnstein Burnstein Plater Captures First Purse of Season in Opening Race at Motor City Fylfot Runs Third ThirdDETROIT DETROIT Mich June 6 The silks of the locally owned Mrs J B Burnstein stable were carried to a length victory by Baltee in the first race a sixfurlong sprint engaging eleven sprinters at the Detroit Fair Grounds today C A ONeil Jrs favored Orcus finr ished second and was three lengths in ad ¬ vance of Lou Molaskys Fylfot at the close closeStarter Starter Bryan Steele experienced no diffi ¬ culty at the gate with the field and a good start was effected without delay Sammy Lucewho had the mount on Baltee took his charge to the front before reaching the initial quarter post with Fylfot in closest pursuit a length and a half back Trans mutable had good speed at this stage of the running and was a wellplaced third two lengths on Skean Dhu which was a half length before Orcus v This vThis order was maintained around the upper turn and Orcus did not begin his bid until straightened for the final drive driveTurning Turning for home Baltee held determinedly to a length advantage with Fylfot still in second position a head before Orcus The ultimate winner shook off Fylfot an eighth from the wire but had to be hard ridden to withstand Orcus fine closing bid Baltee ran the distance over the good track in 114 and second choice in the betting returned his supporters 11 to 5 straight straightWARM WARM SUN IMPROVES TRACK TRACKA A good crowd which proved one of the most enthusiastic to witness the sport dur ¬ ing the current session was on hand for the eightrace program at the local plant Clear weather prevailed to add to the comfort of the gathering The racing strip which was decidedly off for yesterdays sport im ¬ proved under the warm sun and a stiff breeze during the progress of the afternoon and track superintendent J Oliver Brown expressed the hope that the course would be in top shape for the deciding of the 5000 Motor City Handicap here tomorrow tomorrowThe The cofeatured Ferndale Purse a six furlong dash for threeyearolds and the Grosse Pointe Purse a mile and seventy yards test for horses three years old and upward headlined the card The Ferndale attracted a good field of eight sprinters and of these Mrs F Staffords Sameron and Beezley Hirschbergs Berryville were strongly supported The Grosse Pointe drew six good routers of which C Whitney Moores All True and C A ONeil Jrs Rest Awhile were the mediums of stout backing
