Injury Halts Career of English Rider Richard Ferryman Has Hung Up Tack TackBeat Beat American Aces Aboard Invershin and Quashed in Ascot Gold Cup Renewals By Special Correspondent NEWMARKET England Because of an accident Dick Ferryman who scored his dual successes in the Ascot Gold Cup aboard Invershin 1928 and Quashed 1936 at the direct expense of the Amer ¬ icanowned and bred invaders Reigh Count and Omaha has been forced to quit the saddle in which profession he had no superiors and few equals equalsFerrymans Ferrymans victory on J Reid Walkers Invershin when that horse scored his sec ¬ ond straight success in our greatest dis ¬ tance test was cleverly gained over the American challenger Reigh Count sport ¬ ing the silks of Mrs John D Hertz But in getting Lord Stanleys Oaks Stakes heroine Quashed home in front of the American Triple Crown hero Omaha sporting the white red spots and black cap of his ownerbreeder William Woodward Ferryman was forced to use all his artistry to get the stoutrunning daughter of Oblit ¬ erate and Verdict home a nose in front of the son of Gallant Fox and Flambino rid ¬ den by the capable Irish jockey Patrick Rufus Beasley BeasleyThis This was possibly Dicks greatest piece of horsemanship during his 17 years as a jockey jockeyHorseman Horseman of Superb Skill SkillThe The news that the successful and well behaved jockey whose arm was injured in a motor accident last April has decided not to ride again was received with regret throughout this country It was announced that he is to be discharged from the army and that he will undergo another major operation He always will be remembered for his superb horsemanship for he was a distance race rider of real merit and in particular for his amazingly succesful han ¬ dling of twoyearolds in which branch of his profession he had few equals His rec ¬ ord as a jockey was as clean as a whistle whistleFerryman Ferryman served his apprenticeship with trainer Fred Leader at Newmarket and quickly showed that he possessed more than average ability His first big score was in 1925 when he rode the late Joe Shepherds Winalot to victory in the one mile and a half Manchester Cup Handicap During the winter of 19251926 he rode with success in India and in the spring of 1926 returned to the mother country and had his first classic winner his mount being Anthony de Rothschilds Pil ¬ lion in the One Thousand Guineas Stakes at Newmarket He won this event on two other occasions on his contract employer Lord Derbys TideWay in 1936 the year he became associated with the Stanley House Stable as jockey for the first time a post he held until the time of his motor accident last year yearRobbed Robbed of Derby Victory Ferryman scored his third success in the One Thousand Guineas Stakes on ihe late Lord Glaneleys Dancing Time in 1941 These were his only classic successes His j accident last year robbed him of the great j ambition of all jockeys to ride the Derby Stakes winner But for his mishap he would have been astride Watling Street in the Derby at Newmarket last June His place on that victor was taken by the lucky veteran Harry Wragg who had ridden two Derby Stakes winners Felstead 1928 and Blenheim 1930 1930Many Many other important stake races went to Ferrymans mounts In 1928 he won two such important distance handicaps as the Great Metropolitan on Alacrity and the Cesarewitch Stakes on Arctic Star both races run over the two miles and a quarter route the former at Epsom and the latter at Newmarket In 1929 he booted Quashed home in front in the two miles and a quar ¬ terGreat Metropolitan Handicap at Epsom chalking up a second success in that stake Other distance race triumphs to Perry mans credit were achieved aboard Lord Derbys Plassy in the 1936 running of the one mile and a half Coronation Gold Cup at Epsom and astride the same horse in the previous years renewal of the one mile six furlongs Jockey Club Stakes at New ¬ market which same stake he also won on Lady Zia Wernhers Precipitation in 1936 1936Another Another of Ferrymans notable triumphs was gained aboard Wychwood Abbot in the 1934 running of the Cambridgeshire Stakes Handicap at Newmarket NewmarketHis His decision to hang up his boots and saddle leaves a gap in the ranks of the riding profession that will not be easy to fill However it is said that he intends to start as a trainer and his admirers and they are legion will wish him well in his new field
