Woodford Lad Gets Up in Final Stride StrideTakes Takes Measure of Sollure In Commonwealth Handicap As Unchallenged Is Third ThirdBOSTON BOSTON Mass June 5 In a finish that brought the vast majority of the 17123 racing fans to their feet A F Plocks Woodford Lad was along in the closing stride to account for the eighth running of the Commonwealth Handicap The Hadagal colt was achieving his third straight success of the Suffolk Downs meeting and by his triumph today added 4370 to his earnings Sollure from the H G Bedwell string after being brought from back of the pace drew into a clear lead in the stretch and despite the hard riding of Rocco Sisto was forced to suc ¬ cumb in the concluding stride of the six furlongs Mrs Sidney Zells Unchallenged after contributing to the defeat of the top weighted Through Bound had little left for the closing test although taking the show award by a comfortable margin marginThrough Through Bound Tires TiresThrough Through Bound did not leave the gate with his usual dash but was in command before the close of the first sixteenth The Out Bound colt was unable to draw clear being closely pressed by the Zell colt Woodford Lad at this stage of the journey was well back in the company after having dropped back during the early stages Through Bound and Unchallenged contin ¬ ued to battle it out for the command but with the first half covered in 46 seconds it was a pace that was certain to take its toll tollThrough Through Bound was the first to crack and began retiring from contention Mean ¬ while Sisto was getting busy on Sollure and sent the Bedwell threeyearbid up on the outside The latter readily moved to the leaders and a furlong frQm home had drawn into a clear lead Woodford Lad was also beginning to show improved speed and went into con ¬ tention with a rush when straightening out into the stretch Unchallenged was now under a drive but his efforts in racing with Through Bound had cost him too much and the Challenger II colt was unable to better his position Inside the last seventy yards Woodford Lad on the outside moved to the Bedwell colt and battled it out outSollure Sollure right at the end was forced to yield and suffered defeat by a matter of inches The time was 112
