Akrontown Proves Superior to Older Rivals in Opening Event at Detroit Overtakes Pacemaking Dare In Stretch and Finishes Out With Two Lengths to Spare SpareDETROIT DETROIT Mich June 9 Akrontown a representative of the locallyowned stable of George and Joseph Cohen raced to a popular victory in the first race at the De ¬ troit Fair Grounds today Given a clever ride by Patterson Milligan Akrontown came to the end of the six furlongs two lengths before Mrs H P Bonners Dare who held a three and a half length margin over Douglas M Davis Gala Grip third at the wire wireIn In capturing his second purse of the 1943 season Akrontown sprinted over the fast track in 113 and rewarded his backers with odds of 6 to 5 The victor a three yearold gelded son of Jamestown and Van ¬ ity Fair downed eight platers and seven of these were from the older division Dare went to the front before going a quarter of a mile and passing the initial quarter post she held a twolength advan ¬ tage over Gala Grip who was a like margin in advance of Queen Echo Another length back Akrontown raced in fourth position moving along in steady fashion under good handling by Milligan MilliganGala Gala Grip was first to show signs of dis ¬ tress and the Davis filly faltered slightly on the final turn as Akrontown moved up resolutely to challenge Dare The latter then drifted out entering the stretch and Milligan immediately sent the winner to the inside for the closing drive Dare held to a length and a half advantage at the eighth pole but Akrontown responded readily enough when shaken up disposing of the Bonner miss to win drawing clear clearDare Dare had no difficulty in retaining the place award over Gala Grip who faltered during the final furlong Mister Big how ¬ ever could not threaten for the minor end of the spoils and finished a soundly beaten fourth fourthA A crowd which numbered better than 10000 turned out to witness the sport at the Motor City oval
