Shipping Best Effort West Puzzling to Horsemen LOUISVILLE, Ky., June 7. — Horsemen ; who know the Churchill Downs track and its water shedding and "drinking" features never worry about the prospect of mud unii] Derby afternoon rolls around. Time • and again the Downs track has been muddy I the morning of a Derby and good — some times fast — for the running of Americas turf classic. But because the past few days have been very cloudy, with frequent showers, it still is puzzling close followers of racing in this section as to why Best Effort, one of the ablest mud horses in training, was shipped away from Louisville just when he seemed at the top of his form. Jay Paley, who purchased him from C. C. Tanner of New Orleans, wants the colt to race in California and ordered him withdrawn from the big race, though trainer Ray Kindred still thinks the colt would have had a royal chance — especially if muddy.
