MRS ETHEL D JACOBS Her worlds leading money winner Stymie strives for his third straight Gallant Fox vic tory today Twelve m m Face Stymie in Gallant Fox Jacobs Star Won Last Two Runnings of Jamaica Stake StakeChief Chief Opposition Expected From Two Entries of Fervent Faultless and Endeavour II Miss Grillo Phalanx Makes Seasonal Bow in 75000 Mile and ThreeSixteenths Test TestJAMAICA JAMAICA L I N Y May 14 Thirteen of the best handicap horses in training have been named overnight for the tenth rimning of the 75000 Gallant Fox tomorrow headed by Mrs Ethel D Jacobs Stymie worlds richest race horse Stymie will go postward in quest of his third straight victory in the Gallant Fox which formerly was a test at a mile andfive furlongs and run in the autumn The distance has now been reduced to a mile and threesixteenths While Stymie probably will be favored tb carry his 126pound top impost the same burden with which he won in 1946 and a pound less than he carried last year the hand sorne chestnut will have his work cut out for him There are two sets of couplings in the dozen named to oppose the Pride of Brooklyn Calumet Farm has named Fervent 125 and Faultless 118 while Horatio Luro will saddle Endeavour IE 121 for Jorge de Atucha and Miss Grillo 116 for Mrs Barclay Douglas Mill River Stable The two entries are expected to pro ¬ vide the chief opposition oppositionRevised Revised Weights From Dixie DixieFervent Fervent beat Stymie with considerable authority in the Dixie at Pimlico last week getting five pounds more from Stymie than he will tomorrow Capable observers of that race in which Stymie closed with his usual rush from last place believe that the revised weights and the fact that Stymie will be racing on his home track will bring the two horses very close to ¬ gether at the wire Faultless was close to the pace most of the way in the Dixie then flattened out badly at the end endEndeavour Endeavour II won his first race in North America in impressive style at this meeting despite showing a tendency to bear out at the sharp turns Senor Luro has said re ¬ peatedly that the gigantic Argentinian was unable to handle himself in large fields and it is possible that he may be with ¬ drawn His running mate Miss Grillo is one of the best race mares of recent years and has been training well for her seasonal debut Not one of the eight others in the Gal ¬ lant Fox can be eliminated from serious consideration In order of the weights they are C V Whitneys Phalanx 125 W L Branns Gallorette 117 King Ranchs But Why Not William Helis Elpis and Maine Chance Farms Knockdovoi 114 Bayard Sharps Tide Rips 108 Joseph Tuccis Incline 107 and A G Vanderbilts Halconero 104 There is no dead wood in that lineup lineupLeading Leading MoneyWinning Mare MareGallorette Gallorette is the leading money winner of her sex and was never better than she appears to be right now The daughter of Challenger H unlike most of her family prefers a fast track which she did not get when finishing second to Carolyn A in the Firenze Handicap last Saturday Though the skies are overcast and the track muddy at this writing sundry rheumatic amateur weather forecasters declared that the Ja ¬ maica strip will be fast tomorrow Just a little sun would do the trick for the strip drains with miraculous rapidity Phalanx was voted the threeyearold champion of 1947 and raced consistently well under high weight but will be making his first start of the year He has been training well but is at a decided disad ¬ vantage in relation to his more seasoned rivals rivalsBut But Why Not was beaten decisively by Harmonica who later turned in a miser ¬ able effort in her seasons debut here but was the queen of the threeyearold fillies last year and has done everything asked in the mornings Like Gallorette she prefers a last track trackKnockdown Knockdown caused a mild sensation when winning the Excelsior Handicap here Irom wire to wireriaut has not been able to repeat that performance Elpis has beaten Stymie before at Jamaica but doesnt seem to be quite the mare she used tobe incline occasionally comes up with a sparkling effort and has beatgn such good horses as Double Jay and Gallorette on occasion xHe was shipped up here with the express intention of getting part of the rich purse and might be able to do it under his light package packageShowed Showed Signs of Class Last Fall FallHalconero Halconero showed signs of class last fall and beat a moderate field with authority in his 1948 debut here earlier in the week The race was good enough to encourage owner Vanderbilt tp try for the big pot Most South American horses require a year or more of acclimating to show their true form and it may be that Halconero like Endeavour il is just jboming to himself himselfTide Tide Rips sirlonly start in the event of a muddy or sloppy track trainer Willie Passmore has announced He is a recent winner at Jamaica and was good nough last year Jo take second money in the Bel ¬ mont Stakes Stakess s Conn McCreary will rideStymie asusual while N L Piersona vastly underrated jockey vill be on Fervent and Hedley Woodhouse will pilot Faultless RupertO Donoso is to ride Endeavour II with Ira Hanford coming up from New Jersey to guide Miss Grillo GrilloTed Ted Atkinson who has been galloping the mare recently replaces Job Jessop on Gallorette Ferril Zufelt is to ride Knock ¬ down in place of Doug Dodson who will be astride Vulcans Forge in the Preakness while Claude Erickspn will ride Incline and Eric Guerin is to be on But Why Not while Eddie Arcaro rides Citation in the Pimlico classic Bobby Permane has been engaged for Halconero and Shelby Clark will ride Phalanx No rider has been named for Tide Rips RipsA A crowd of more than 50000 is expected to pack the Jamaica stands for the closing program of the meeting assuming that the weather is reasonably good
