Richards Rides 4,000th Winner at Sandown Park LONDON, England, M»y 4 Renters. — Gordon Richards created *n all-time record when he rode his four-thousandth winner as he guided the champion sprinter, Abrnant, to a two lengths victory in the five-furlong; Lubbock Sprint Stakes at Sandowa Park race track at Surrey today. Richards celebrates his forty-sixth birthday tomorrow. Since he began riding 30 years ago, Richards has ridden in 18,478 races and been champion jockey 22 times in the last 25 years. Richards was born at Oaken Gates, Shropshire, May 5, 1904, and had his first mount at Lingfield Park in 1920. His first winner was Gay Lord, at Midlands race track, Leicester, the following year. His nearest rival in number of winners ridden is Yorkshire-born Johnny Longden, champion jockey of the United States, who had ridden 3,451 winners by the end of March of this year. In the unsaddling enclosure at Sandown, Richards said, "Only surprise to me is my four-thousandth winner has come so quickly, because it does not seem long since I reached 3,000. I am now looking forward to the day when my total wUl be 5,000."
