Name Armstrong Sports Director at Minnesota Ike Will Resign Utah Post To Succeed Frank McCormick MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., May 12 UP.— _ The board of regents of the University of Minnesota today appointed Ike Armstrong, : of the University of Utah, as Minnesota x athletic director to succeed Frank McCormick, . who resigned. A statement by university president J. L. ,. Morrill said Armstrong had accepted and -j would assume his duties July 1. Armstrong had been a dark horse in the e speculation as to identity of the new director. _ Bernie Bierman, Minnesota football U coach, and several other candidates had 3 been considered to have the "inside track" » for the appointment from time to time. However, shortly before noon, Morrill II issued the following statement: "To fill the vacancy in the position of director of the department of- physical d education and athletics at the University y of Minnesota, caused by the resignation of I Frank McCormick, the board of regents of the university, on the recommendation of ,f the president, today appointed Mr. Ike e Armstrong, at present director of athletics is at the University of Utah. "Mr. Armstrong will assume Ws duties July 1, the effective date of Mr. Mccormicks resignation." Morrill announced last November 21 that McCormick, athletic director since 1932, had announced his desire to resign in a a letter dated September 1, 1949. McCormick has not indicated what he 1 plans to do after leaving the athletic directorship at the end of next month.
