Chicago Handicap Goes To Over Night in Drive Whips Thank You Sir by Two as 15,649 Look On at Sportsmans By TEDDY COX SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111., May 13.— Last fall when C.TJ. Yaeger bowed out of the racing picture, Marion H. VanBerg stepped into the dispersal held at Washington Park and paid ,000 -for the veteran gelding, Over Night.. This afternoon, before 15,649 the largest crowd of the spring meeting .here, the seven-year-old showed himself to be a bargain by romping off with the ,500 Chicago Handicap, a mile and one-sixteenth event that terminated the series of features decided at the 19-day meeting. Over Night enjoyed the services of the California lad, Donald Wagner, and the combination functioned smartly throughout. The blonde-thatched youth had dead aim through the journey and when he gave the signal at the top of the stretch the gelding went readily to the fore and was well in front at the finish. Driving hard in back of the winner were J. N. Nugents Thank You Sir, who gained a nose decision over Valley View Farms Little Bobbles, who held on gamely after establishing a blistering pace. Over Night was favorite in the field of eight and returned .60 to his legion of followers. His time for the distance-, 1:49, was only four-fifths of a second away from the track record. Excellent weather conditions prevailed as the National Jockey Club offered its semi-final program, with the skies being Continued on Page Forty-Four Over Night Proves Best In Sportsmans Headliner Continued from Page One clear and enough bite in the atmospheric conditions to make everything comfortable. The pattern for the Chicago was just about set at the first turn, where Little Bobbles stepped briskly to the front and Over Night was in second place. This order was maintained until the final turn, where it was obvious that the VanBerg racer was much the stronger, and he forged to the front and drew away. Thank You Sir closed gamely to nab the place from the pacemaker.
