Danny Direct, John Lee Vie In Sportsmans Headliner SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, HI., June i 29. — Ten of the fastest leaving pacers in -the nation will vie for a purse of ,050 in the first annual Sprint Championship Stake at Sportsmans Park Saturday night. The early closing stake event, for 11 class ! pacers, will be raced over the six and one- : half furlongs route, and attracted a field : consisting of Guest Star, Mr. Dale, Thomas Hat, Chief Mite, John Lee, Easter Grattan, Danny Direct, Court Lawful, Ann Cash and Victory Grattan. Judging from the competition, the track record of l:391/5 for the distance can easily fall by the wayside. Dr. Parker, holder of the mark, failed to qualify and wont be around for the championship event. On the basis of last Saturday nights 1 performance, harness fans may be treated to one of the fastest quarters ever witnessed at Sportsmans Park. Danny Direct, Canadas gift to the pacing world, showed that he can leave from any position when he took the race track away from such speedsters as Chief Mite and Mr. Dale. j But, the pacer to really watch in the . "sprint" is Easter Grattan. For, in his last outing the 8-year-old Silent Grattan 1 bay gelding, owned and driven by Dr. F. B. Maher, Eau Claire, Wis., equalled the track record for the 9/16 mile with a blazing j 1:08% performance. | This trip alone is likely to make Easter Grattan the publics choice for the "sprint" j attractions. In addition to being in top condition, Easter Grattan grabbed the A coveted pole position in the draw. With Easter Grattan leaving from the , rail, and Danny Direct from the No. 2 spot, : John Lee No. 4 and Chief Mite No. 5, the ! wheels should be a-churning when Starter Ralph Esfces gives the word "go." Guest Star, who shattered his own mark of 2:12% for the mile with a brilliant 2:11% trip last Saturday night, will start ■ from the second tier out of the No. 9 posi- tion and may find matters a little rough.
