Handicap on January 17 and carrying through with an allowance race victory followed by tri ¬ umphs in the McLennan Widener Excel ¬ sior and Gallant Fox Handicaps All of his former stakes were captured here in New Jersey beginning with the second start of his career as a juvenile in the New Jersey Stallion Stakes when this correspondent prematurely advised of great things to come comeWeather Weather conditions are expected to be ideal and a large crowd will be out tomor ¬ row to watch Spartan Valor do his work Although the impost assigned him by rac ¬ ing secretary M C Ty Shea is the high ¬ est he has yet shouldered and his rivals are not without some recommendation at least at the weights there will be few here to dispute authority through the wagering department departmentSpartan Spartan Valor is the biggest box office name in the East right now and especially here in New Jersey where his accomplish ¬ ments have added immeasurable prestige to the clause of New Jerseybred The homestaters hail him as a champion and the best to come along since Exterminator another New Jerseybred There are still some who say that the son of Attention has not defeated an opponent of top cali ¬ bre in top condition but the majority who observed his triumph in the Gallant Fox Handicap swung tightly over into his cor ¬ ner with accompanying fancy eulogies eulogiesShouldered Shouldered 129 in Gallant Fox Win WinThe The Gallant Fox provided a stern test for the Atttention colt He picked up 129 pounds raced over a sloppy track under pressure with Greek Ship and without having a chance for a breather took out and away by two lengths to win handily over Alerted Auditing and Greek Ship who was fourth Some of his times have been sensational and he registered a new track record of 147 Ys carrying 118 pounds in the one mile and a furlong McLennan Handicap His total earnings in three sea ¬ sons are now well above 200000 200000Call Call Over himself a highstanding favor its of Jerseyites will be accorded the best chance for an upset The Devil Diver horse was a multiple stake winner here in New Jersey last year and he is one of the few who have ever beaten Spartan Valor He managed that here at Garden State Park last October when he won the sixfurlong Princeton Handicap in which Spartan Valor showed the early speed and gave way to finish sixth Call Over rather slow com ¬ ing around this season broke into the win ¬ ning column in the Erlton Purse last week and he should be ready for his best bestSonic Sonic was the easiest kind of a winner here a few days ago at one mile and a sixteenth He was highly regarded last spring when he was one of the early favor ¬ ites for the Kentucky Derby but he failed in that test and did not return to top form Mass OGold won his last race at Gulfstream Park but three times in Florida he was behind Spartan Valor The best of those efforts was when he finished second beaten two lengths in the McLennan Fair Game a Floridabred was last out in the Governors Handicap at Suffolk Downs in which he raced well but most of his better performances came against much lesser company and at sprint distances distancesJoey Joey Boy is not to be overlooked He was considered locally to be pretty much on a par with Spartan Valor last year although losing two decisions to him and then apparently going off in form to be well beaten by the Helis charge in the Benjamin Franklin Handicap Joey Boy wintered in Columbia S C and gave a sharp prep performance on opening day here finishing a bangup fourth to Roman Fair in the Moorestown Purse
