Dewey Pointer Favorite 1 In Maywood Pacing-Event Faces Merry Copper,Spud Worthy-, Three-Time Winners at Meeting MAYWOOD PARK, Maywood, 111., May 24. A balanced field of seven pacers will go postward Monday night in the featured seventh race at Maywood Park as the West Side track enters the final month of its harness racing season. Dewey Pointer, who showed considerable stretch speed while earning a second in his last start, will open as a slight choice over Winding Brook, Wichita Pegasus, Laura Jane Tryax, Merry Copper, Roddy and Spud Worthy. Every horse in the field except Lawrence .Greenes Laura Jane Tryax has at least one 1952 victory to his credit. Merry Copper, five-year-old Court Jester gelding owned by Simon and Paisley Stables, Western Springs, and Spud Worthy, seven-year-old Spud Hanover gelding, owned and driven by Mel Fitzpatrick of Charleston, 111., will be looking for their fourth decisions of the meeting. -Merry popper has finished in the money in all but one of its seven starts. Spud Worthy paced to a length victory over Winding Brook in his last outing. But Winding Brook,-who bears the colors of Mrs.. Virginia Henson of Chicago, has captured an impressive 2:08 mile since bowing to Spud Worthy. Winding Brook will start from the inside in this mile event, with Red Scott driving. Wichita Pegasus, starting from the No. 2 position with owner Ellsworth Abare of Stockton, Calif., driving, brings a record of two wins and five money finishes in 10 starts into the race. Roddy, owned by Mrs. Eleanore James of Wheaton, was a mild Maywood sensation last season, but has been able to get home first only once this year. Roddy will be driven by Frank Darish, whose 12 victories are tops among Maywood sulky pilots.
