Sysonby at Belmont May Become 00,000 Event Seek Late Closing Entry of Swaps Nashua, Helioscope and High Gun ELMONT, L. I., N. Y., June 27.-rBel-mont Park today announced a tentative change in the conditions for the Sysonby Stakes, leaving the door open for a possible 00,000 added race among some of the countrys leading performers at its autumn meeting. George D. Widener, president of the Westchester Racing Association, announced that the closing date for the Sysonby has been pushed back to September 14, two weeks before the September 24 running of the event, in the hope of attracting the nominations of the two top three-year-olds, Swaps and Nashua, and the two outstanding handicap stars, Helioscope and High Gun. Widener said that under those circumstances Belmont Park would put up a purse of 00,000 and increase the distance of the Sysonby from one mile -to "probably" a mile and an eighth. The race again Continued on Page Fifty-Two , i i , Sysonby at Belmont May -Become 00,000 Event Seek Late Closing Entry of Swaps, Nashua, Helioscope and High Gun Continued from Page One would be at weight-for-age, as it has been for its last two runnings. In 1954 the Sysonby for three-year-olds and up, carried an added value of 5,000. However, it was understood here today that the 00,000 purse and nine-furlong distance was not contingent on the entry of- all four racing stars. It was believed that if only two of the quartet are nominated the new conditions will be adopted. If not, the race will revert to its 5,000 purse and mile distance of last season, but will still be run at weight-for-age. Definite announcement of the conditions will be made at the time entry blanks for the Sysonby are mailed to owners at the end of August. " Widener added that plans for the balance of the stakes to be run at Belmonts IajJ-jafieting-Qf25dav, from gfw pleted and that nomination blanks will be mailed about July 25. These stakes will close on August 15, with the exception of the Sysonby and The Jockey Club Gold Cup, which also has a late closing. Referring to the recent efforts to persuade Rex Ellsworth, owner of Swaps, and William Woodward, Jr., owner of Nashua, to bring their colts together in a match race, Widener suggested the Sysonby as the possible meeting ground for these sophomores. "If Mr. Ellsworth and Mr Woodward are inclined to run Swaps and Nashua," he said, "and they were to meet such great handicap stars as High Gun Helioscope and others, Belmont would again be presenting one of the great sport-ring events of our times."
