First Horses Were Brought To Blue Grass State in 1750 1750CHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 4 Authentic Kentucky historical files reveal that the first horses to come into the state were brought by Thomas Walker in 1750 Walker crossed the mountains from Virginia and hunters later brought pack horses into the Blue Grass region Horse power was used in the earlier days for farm use and the principle crop was tobacco tobaccoKentucky Kentucky racing history goes back over 170 years There were horse races on the streets of Lexington as early as 1780 but the betting was not regulated until many years later Wagering was among the owners as to the respective merits of then charges
