. — . , Bay Meadows Meeting Goes Into Books as One of Best Rich Purses Attract Classy « Racing Talent; Attendance, , Wagering Increase Over 56 By Staff Correspondent The California Jockey Clubs spring meeting of 55 days, which overlapped the closing days of the Santa Anita season and several of the first days at Hollywood Park, will go into the record books as one of the most successful sessions ever held in northern California. Figures for both attendance and mutuel handle exceeded those of last year, when the meeting was conducted in the fall, and the racing itself provided competition of the keenest sort. Bay Meadows hung up its richest assortment of purses and they helped to attract to the San Mateo course some of the Wests best racing talent including Round Table who won the Bay Meadows Derby and then went East to win the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland in track-record time and to finish third in the famed Kentucky Derby. Bay Meadows distributed a total of ,510,060 in purses, which included the 00,000 William P. Kyne Memorial Handicap. The total handle for the 55 days was 2,907,666 for a daily average of 80,139 and the total attendance was 676,669 for an average of 12.303. The meeting was conducted under the joint directorship of Mrs. Kyne, whose husband passed away only a week before the opening of the track, and Joseph Cohen, long time associate of the late Mr. Kyne. It was Mrs. Kynes first active participation in the management of Bay Meadows and that she did a competent job in such a complex position is reflected in the success of the track. Most Exciting Race The most exciting race of the season was the Kyne Handicap in which the first five horses under the wire were lapped on each other, but patrons probably were more delighted with the outcome of the Bay Meadows Derby which earned Round Table the trip to Kentucky. In the Kyne Handicap, Pibe Carlitos, Eddie Schmidt, Count Chic, Rumbo and Holandes II. reached the end of the mile and one-eighth with scarcely a length separating the whole field of 15. Pibe Carlitos, an Argentine import purchased earlier in the meeting by Mr. and Mrs. Ray Camp from the International Stable, was a supplemental nominee for the Kyne as was Round Table for the Bay Meadows Derby. Three other foreign-breds also won stakes here this spring. The Argentine Holandes II. won the Robert OBrien Memorial at a mile and one-sixteenth, the Argentine I Rumbo captured the Burlingame Handicap in his first start in this country and the Irish -bred Windsor Serial took the Alameda County Handicap at six furlongs. In all, Bay Meadows offered 13 stakes ranging in value from 0,000 added to 00,000 gross guaranteed. The biggest money-winning stable of the season was that maintained by Mr. and Mrs. Ray Camp; the leading trainer in point of winners was Dale Landers and jockeys W. Harmatz and A. Maese headed the riders.
