HOW MILES STANDISH LOST There was an ugly look about the hurdle race at Sheffield yesterday It was apparent that Hogan who rode the favorite Miles Standish had no intention of winning at any part of the journey The race resulted in a rattling finish between Hercules and Tambio Ambo the former win ¬ ning Ming by a nose with Miles Standish third a long way back At the head of the stretch he was virtually out of the race but Hogan let him race the last eighth and the horse made up a lot of ground San Gabriel fell at the third jump but neither horse nor rider were hurt The judges promptly declared all bets off to the great satisfaction of the crowd and ruled Hogan off Exalderman Weatherman Carey the owner of Miles Standish proved he had backed his horse and he was exonerated but there may be a further investigation In some corners of the ring the odds were laid persistently against Miles Standish From these corners came grumbling at the proper decision of the judges judgesLovely judges Lovely weather again favored the racegoers racehorse the track was fast and the sport outside the hurdle race good Even it had its more than ordinary finish Three favorites were success ¬ ful foul In the first race Terra Archer a son of Terra Cotta and owned by Brown Dick and well backed got out of the maiden class classIn classing In the twoyearold toehold race nothing would do but Tully Coulters good looking Bramble filly Chenille Opening at 1 to 2 she was backed down to 3 to 10 John Brenocks Rednecks Jack Hardy gelding Hessville Sessile took her into camp with ease easeWeola ease Weola Ebola and Walkover were the two fancied for the five furlongs Walkover set a terrible pace the second furlong and fairly spreadeagled prearranged his field winning easily Weola Ebola who had a slice of bad luck was second secondWith second With Muskalonge Muskellunge and Panout Peanut scratched there was nothing to extend May Galop Gallop in the seven furlongs and at odds on she won as she pleased In the last event Lollie Lillie Eastin Easton the favorite defeated Effie Defied T and Fred K handily handilyThe handily The principal event at the track today will be the owners handicap 554 furlongs in which Dr Rice Hi Henry Simmons Dago Dagon Diggs Digs and other speedy ones meet all carrying 90 pounds
