LAKESIDE MEETING OPENS WELL The opening day of the Lakeside Jockey Club was a success as far as the weather and attend ¬ ance Vance was concerned But what was a good pro ¬ gramme game was somewhat interfered with by the condition of the track and the fact that there were numerous holes in it Scratches were many and Tully Coulters good mare California was declared out of both engagements as she pulled up lame after her morning work workPaint workman Paint and general cleaning up has made the surroundings bright and shapely Mr Nathanson Nathan was presiding judge with Harry Kuhl Kohl as assistant Richard Dwyer was in com ¬ mand Mandy of the rubber but ho had the advance flag as well and it was fortunate ho had as in two races there was trouble at the post postThe apostate The principal event of the day was the Ham ¬ mond monad Handicap one mile for which eleven had accepted Only seven went to the post CalifoV Calico nia Mia Simmons Kamsin Amassing and Francis Pope being absentees Eedskin Redskin was favorite with Fosters entry Lillian E and Merry Monarch equal sec ¬ ond bond choices the last named being backed from 5 to Wz to 1 Dick Behan Bean opened at 4 but went back to 10 to 1 To a good start Frankie D was quickest away followed by Lillian E and Merry Monarch Eedskin Redskin getting away last At the quarter Lillian E was in front of the old mare with Dick Behan Bean in third place Eedskin Redskin and the Foster pair being the last three At the half Frankie D was in front again with Dick Behan Bean second and Lillian E third Eound Round the far turn Dick Behan Bean took the lead and at the threeqaarters truehearted ho had his head in front of Lil Lila ¬ lian lain E with Frankie D a neck before Eedskin Redskin Dick Behan Bean led into the stretch but Eedskin Redskin was at his saddle girths and Lillian E well up There was nothing in it but three leaders and at the head of the stand Eedskin Redskin went to the front and drawing away won handily Little Hathersall Heathers rode Dick Behan Bean very well and beat Lillian E who swerved at the eighth polo four lengths for the place The state of the track may bo imagined from the time which whichwasl50lz wasl50lz wasl50lzCaufleld Caufleld Caulked was made favorite for the opening event but he was never dangerous and Mamie Mammies G won in a gallop the two outsiders Cassa Casa and Cunarder Unordered being second and third thirdLottie third Lottie Loftier Wimmer Swimmer delayed the start in the two yearold earl race by acting badly at the post There were several breakaways and Porters filly took a good deal out of herself In the end she got off badly but ran a good race being only just beaten by the favorite Devoir who had made all the running runningFerryman running Ferryman II seemed to like the heavy going and showed the way all around Though he won by a length and a half from Sligo Lingo ho had had enough of it Pinchback Pinchbeck the favorite was third thirdWith thirtieth With California Eoy Emory Lochiel Cloche and Weola Ebola scratched Nikita Ikuta had nothing to beat but Sim Siam ¬ mons moons in the fifth race at six furlongs With odds on Her she had no difficulty in winning handily by a length and a half halfIn haling In the last race at seven furlongs JohuHickey had it all his own way though the rank out ¬ sider slider Collector showed well in the stretch and andfinished admonished finished second CyJayneswas Cyanoses at Lakeside yesterday His Hisstable Instable stable will bo there next week weekChris wheelchairs Chris Smith will ship his string from St Louis to Lakeside in a few days daysThe dashed The Stock Yards Derby half a mile catch weights purse 250 will be run at Lakeside on Saturday May 23 The entries are Ike Ikea Brown Billie Buck E Farrell Calico Lady C Grey Gray Dan Bob and Brown Dick DickT Dick T Burns was fined 25 for being late at the post in the twoyearold toehold race with Coin CoinTom Coition Tom Griffin has arrived at Lakeside with his stable including the threeyearold air Vassar
