CALIFORNIA THREEYEAROLDS CONTINUED CONTINUEDThe The best of the Kentucky division was prob ¬ ably Dr Catlett Wo saw him straight as a string at Detroit to beat Lord Zoni with but scant difference in the weights The last han ¬ dicap at St Louis asked Algol to give Lord Zoni twelve pounds Ho did it and beat him a block blockBut But to return to the form here Admitting that Aquinas is the best in California or at least the equal of any here we must admit that the class is not up to the best in the East Sep ¬ tember 2 in a condition race at St Louis for twoyearolds Buckvidere was asked to carry 115 pounds to Aquinas 112 pounds The latter was at his best that day and in a furious drive beat Buckvidero a head Aquinas got off none too well yet he was not a much bettor horse than Buckvidere that day Later on in a stnke race at a mile Algol got 123 pounds and Buckvi ¬ dere 105 pounds R Williams took the long route on Algol came on when he got ready and beat Buckvidere in a gallop I do not mean to say that Algol could give Aquinas eighteen pounds and b at him but I think that even Barney Schreibor will admit that his homely gelding is better off in the stable when Algol is xunning true Aquinas beat Algol once during the summer at light weights but the race was falsely run and the Top Gallant colt was far from himself after a long let up upIt It looked last winter as though the next best colt shown in California after Casper was Cou ¬ pon a son of Martonhurst in the Hobart Stable He acted like a good horse in his oarly starts Trainer Hunn told me the other day that after his last race last spring the colt was taken sick and that no veterinary has ever been able to determine what the disease was Hunn thinks the colt was either poisoned or has consump ¬ tion Ho has wasted to a mere skeleton and will probably never amount to anything anythingJohn John Shields well known at Chicago where he trained and raced Dungarven Gov Adams and other horses owns Howard S a grand look ¬ ing brown colt by Whistle Jacket This colt is up to any weights and on a dry track is pretty near first class classMr Mr Corrigan has a fine looking and good colt in Ge ser who has bad underpinning mores the pity I do not think he is firstclass but he is more than useful The best of the fillies is Tea Rose a chestnut daughter of Midlothian She is owned by John Mackey but Geo Rose has her running qualities She is a sweet article for six or seven furlongs but is willing to pass it up after that I shall have something to say to you of the older horses in a subsequent letter
