Racing Stories or the Day Real horse news must bo scaaco in Mem ¬ phis In lien thereof comes a tintinabulating story of 1887 about C H Todd working for the American Derby by lantern light at the Mem ¬ phis track under the intelligent eye of Dennis alias White Hat McCarty who is said tohava won heavily on the confidence given him by the iridescent trial Yet the facts of the turf are that White Hat was a mere figure about C H Todd Albert Cooper trained and managed the Joe Hooker oolt He had no lamplight trial won the Derby in a lucky sort of way and wasnt anything like a good thing to the ef ¬ fervescent McCarty or anyone else The Todd story is told to illustrate another fable about Mr Pattersons Burlesque having worked a mile in the same uncanny way last Monday in a little better than nothing nothingOne One of Pattersons two year olds by Hindoo is also tabbed for a quarter in 22yt seconds and a half in 49 seconds and still another Hindoo colt as being better than his kinsman If peo ¬ ple who write of racing would study the horse they would find that he doesnt work well in less than daylight and shies at lanterns in the dark
