MONTANA RACING LIBERALITY Manager Ed A Tipton of the Montana tracks is in Chicago He registered at the Auditorium Annex Wednesday and will be here until Friday night Tipton is a keen character He talked of racing and its Montana angle in a succinct way last night The Montana harness events filled most gloriously he said The thorough ¬ bred stakes did well but could have done bet ¬ ter considering the display The meetings will be better than those of 1898 in both lines Thats certain Im well satisfied with the entries entriesBen Ben Kinney a good oilice man as well as a good horseman has charge of the general work as assistant secretary of both the Butte and An ¬ aconda meetings Tipton rules this roost though Jim Ferguson will start the horses The judiciary has not been appointed as yet yetJoe Joe Murphy could have presided at both meet ¬ ings But ho wpd engaged to St Louis Col W S Barnes of the Melbourne Stud will be of ¬ fered the chief places in the stands If he ac ¬ cepts the posts will be well filled filledMr Mr Tipton doesnt declare to have any par ¬ ticular business in Chicago outside that of freight rates and halt on the way home But he is likely to drift around the Indiana stables be ¬ fore he goes to Kentucky and talk with leading owners about the advantages of a Montana trip for the purse display of the Butte and Ana ¬ conda meetings a continuous array of fiftyfour days daysThis This display is rich enough to attract the eye of thoroughbred owners alone Here is a sam ¬ ple of items June 26 4Vi furlongs Purse 300 70 to sec ¬ ond 30 to third 2yearolds 1 mile Purse 100 30 to second 40 to third 5 mile Purse 350 70 to second 30 to third H mile Purse 300 70 to second 30 to third thirdThis This display is the average of the first thir ¬ teen days Montana purse array The lowest purse is 300 and there are over three purse races per day More than half are of 350 and MOO each the fiat handicaps are of 500 and there are some four hurdle handicaps with 400 purses during the term termThe The Ogden Stake is within the first thirteen days programme It is to be run July 3 The Copper City Handicap is on the July 5 card and the Smeltermans Handicap on that of July 10 10The The Montana Stakes drew but sparely from the Eastern racing brigade ffad they closed twenty days later their entries would have doubled The Illinois situation was not as clear April 15 as it was May 5 5There There is not any question about the merit and stability of the Montana meetings Thorough ¬ bred horsemen are not wise to neglect the field The stake entries show the class of the horses to race there The Montana folks love their own and will bet on their own Such horses as David Simon W Dorian or any good handicap animal able to take up his weight and run a mile in 1 41Vi or mile and a quarter in 208 or so can earn a lot of money for his owner at Butte or Anaconda AnacondaTheres Theres sharp action too in Montana for a few good sprinters who can run five furlongs in 1 02 or less Such racing tools can beat far more of the horses on the wegtern circuit than can beat them
