TURF CONGRESS AND JOCKEY CLUB CLUBNEW COLUMBINE NEW YORK December 10 Assistant Secretary Hanlon Hanson of the Jockey Club gives out under instructions in view of the statement which was made after the meeting of the American Turf congress at Cincinnati on Dec 7 the following telegrams which he says give the exact phase of the situation CINCINNATI Ohio Dec 7 1897 August Bel Belo mont President Jockey Club At a consultation here today of friends of legitimate racing in ¬ cluding clouding several members of the Turf Congress about the unfortunate situation of those racing at Pimlico Pillion since Nov 30 under Turf Congress bylaw No 6 It is the sentiment that no pur pour ¬ pose existed to violate the bylaw by those par ¬ ticipating inculpating and the members of the Turf Con ¬ gress egress will be asked to relieve the Pimlico Pillion people as soon as action can be had with the belief that the Jockey Club and the Turf Congress will hereafter reach a mutual position on winter racing Can yon express an opinion on the probability of accord between the two bodies on that subject subjectC subject C C MAFFITT AFFLICT Pres Ypres American Turf Congress CongressMr Congress Mr Belmont replied as follows NEW YORK Dec 7 C C MaiHtt Mitt President American Turf Congress The Jockey club has held itself ready at any time to consider any proposition from the American Turf Congress since the Congress broke its agreement with the Jockey club but could not under any circum circus ¬ stances take the first step I fee no reason why an understanding cannot be reached You must recognize however in this connection that if the Jockey Club is to maintain its authority and dignity in a manner to be expectedof expected it it could not tolerate the extension of any of your regulations over race meetings under Jockey Club rules within what is accepted as its own territory AUGUST BELMONT
