GOSSIP OF THE TURF George E Smith otherwise Pittsburg Pittsburgh Phil s one of the most interesting figures of the American turf and his opinions on turf affairs always interest followers of racing In a recent conversation about horses jockeys racing and his own operation he is credited with saying In regard to Hamburg I have my doubts about Iiis Iii staying in fact I dont don't think he will ever show that he can go a distance I would like to see him do well for his owners sake and hope Mr Daly Dally will get his money out of him When Uriel Muriel ran second to Hamburg Jin Jim the Double Event Uriels Oriels first start Uriel Muriel was catching him at the finish and Wilhite Iolite had to move on Hamburg to beat him out had the race been seven furlongs Uriel Muriel would have won I believe ho would have beaten Hamburg had they met later on onAs Jonas As to my stable I like to keep the numbers down in the winter I have now only Belmar Bellman The Winner and Ahom Ahem the latter a twoyear twofer old half brother to Ben Brush by Sir Dixon Roseville and a very promising one My brother flias flies two twoyearolds toeholds in the stable one called Handcuff by Hanover Black Maria and the other by Belvidere Belvedere Crocket Rocket My nephew owns a twoyearold toehold colt by Logic Blue Stocking which he only paid 35 for and it looks as though he would turn out well wellI ellI I have only been to the stable once since the season closed closedI closed I am not at all surprised at Sloanes Loaners success in England I went over purposely to study the game there and concluded when I came away that it was a great place to go to with American horses and American jockeys I am convinced that American jockeys like Sloane Sloan Taral Aral Clay ¬ ton R Williams and Simms Sims can teach the best English jockeys new wrinkles wrinklesI wrinkles I am a great believer in Simms Sims notwith nitwit ¬ standing he was not thought very highly of as a jockey in England The horses he rode last year had too much of it and did not give him the chance he deserved I lost heavily over Ben Eder Edger when he was beaten by Ben Holladay Holland Eder Edger sulked and would not run a foot when I know his trial was good enough for him to win I like Previous very much and think he will prove the best 3yearold out this year yearI year I mean to curtail my betting considerably to what I have been in the habit of it is a useless worry and as I dont don't need the money I intend to take things easier another season I hope to have a good stable and shall pick up two or three more horses whenever I see any to suit Ten years ago clashing racing dates were un ¬ known to the western turf Now they are the rule and unavoidable under present conditions That the division of horses jockeys and book ¬ makers particularly the latter among a num numb ¬ ber beer of tracks where racing is being conducted simultaneously detracts from public interest and profitable returns is freely conceded But it is not probable that any very great reform in this matter will be wrought until the western jockey clubs gain business sense enough to con Vstitute Statute a central authority with power to appor vapor ¬ tion ion dates so as to serve the best interests of ofall fall all concerned It is something of a gain that the three clubs with tracks depending on Cincinnati for sup ¬ port and the Louisville Club have agreed upon division of time by which their racing dates follow in succession Last year racing began at Newport April 2 and continued over forty five racing days clashing in that time with Memphis Nashville Lexington St Louis and Louisville This year operations begin at the Newport track and continue for twentyone twenty rac race ¬ ing King days Louisville follows with fifteen days Oakley Ankle with fifteen and Latonia Antonia with twenty seven The opening day at Newport will be April 9 that being also the opening day at Memphis where nineteen days will carry the meeting up to April 30 It is apparent that Nashville and Lexington will be forced to race in contention with formidable opposition under this arrangement Lexington however has a chance for a clean field by taking the dates from April 1 to 8 inclusive and might do a great deal worse than to take them For Nashvilla Nashville there is no escape from clashing with Memphis and Louisville The St Louis authorities have as yet an ¬ nounced bounced no dates Last year the Inaugural day there was May 15 and it may be assumed that the opening this year will be near the same date As matters now stand dates arranged for the western circuit are as follows Little Rock Ark March 30 April 7 Nashville Tenn Tenon TennNewport Pennywort April 2 16 Newport Ky April 9 May 3 Memphis Tennr Tenon April gApril April 30
