NEWPORTS NEWPORT NEW OFFICIALS The managers of the Queen City Jockey Club have selected the following officials for the ap ¬ proaching poaching Newport meeting meetingPresiding meeting Presiding Judge L P Tarleton Carleton TarletonAssociate Associate Judges Henry M Queen and J Gratz Graft Hanly Hanky HanlyStarter Analyst Starter H D Brown BrownIt Brown It was the intention to have betting open to all bookmakers who might choose to draw in but this intention was abandoned and thfj bet ¬ ting privileges were leased to Eddie Austin What led up to this change in policy was thus set forth in the Commercial Tribune of the day prior to giving Austin control of the betting bettingIt betting It is said that the majority of bookmakers on the line at the New Orleans track will not hang up their slates at Newport but will book at Memphis the meeting there running from April 9 to 30 As will be seen Newport and Memphis will conflict a ad if the layers doing business at New Orleans go to Memphis the financial returns for Newport from bookmakers will be pretty small The Newport people in ¬ tended to throw open the betting ring to all layers this spring but this plan has been abandoned abandonedWhen abandoned When Sol Sharp died he left the Newport track in a rather precarious financial condi condo ¬ tion ion Sharps widow Frank Fowler and Georcr Gerry Bennett are now the principal owners of th Newport track and for some time it has been known that the treasury of the Queen City Jockey Club was not full to overflowing None of the owner are disposed to advance any money to run the spring meeting It would not be ad ¬ visable viable to give a meeting and run chances of paying purses and the daily expenses It was thought for a time that enough layers at New Orleans would book at Newport to pay opera ¬ ting expeases expanses but this belief has been shattered by a canvass of Crescent City pencilers pencil the majority of whom have signified their intention to book at Memphis MemphisHence Memphis Hence it will be decided by the Newport track owners to sell the betting privileges In this they see the only hope of giving a meeting this spring Prominent bookmakers in the west will be asked to bid on the privileges and they will be sold to the highest bidder In case no one purchases the ring privileges some one with plenty of finances will have to step into th breach in order for the Queen City Jockey Club to give her meeting this spring
