GOSSIP OF THE TURF The Cincinnati Commercial Tribune of Mon ¬ day says Jake Marklein Marlin yesterday sold his 4 yearold earl Iroquois gelding Sedan after he won the second race to J H Smith for 400 Sedan has alternated between Markleins Marlins and Smiths stable for the past year At New Orleans Smith bought Sedan out of a selling race from Mark ¬ lein lien for 400 A couple of months later Mark ¬ lein lien repurchased Sedan from Smith for 350 The gelding won several races for Marklein Marlin and more than earned his feed bills Yesterday Smith was seized with a yearning to again possess Sedan and he negotiated with Marklein Marlin for his purchase Sedan was entered to be sold for 300 and when Marklein Marlin placed his figure at 400 Smith promptly accepted it Sedan is keeping Elkin Welkin Pat Garrett and others com ¬ pany panky The 5000 Labor Day Stakes to be decided at Anaconda Mont September 5 received a total of 51 entries a list that Manager Ed Tip ton may well be proud of Among the horses entered are such good ones as Ogden Isidor Insider Senator Bland Rubicon Goodrich Grady Ostler Hostler Joe John Havlin Haling Serrano Ace J A Gray Han dOr doer Banished Salvation Scottish Chief Bitter Root Dan Rice Frank Thompson Galivant Gallivant Joe Clark J H C Judge Quigley Count of Flanders Schiller Chiller Byron McClelland Macmillan and Remp Rep There will evidently be good racing up in Montana this year yearPeople People hereabouts who may be wondering why certain of their turfy turf friends who have spent the winter and spring in Frisco have not put in an appearance now that racing there is over may find the matter accounted for in the following remark of ihe he San Francisco Chron Chiron ¬ icle ice of last Saturday There are several score of racetrack followers who have pressing busi bus ¬ ness on the different eastern racetracks just at present but the majority of them will have to win out the price of transportation this after Jean Beraud Bead is a big colt on short legs He is a type rarely to be noted among really high class horses but when one of this sort is good he is likely to be unusually good Jean Beraud Bead has a splendid back and loin He is short Coupled short below the knee has great quar quark ¬ ter tear development and almost perfect action Such a horse is likely to develop the ability to carry weight and go any distance as Carbine a horse of similar type did in Australia Morn ¬ ing King Telegraph TelegraphH TelegrapH H F Edwards will take in the Montana cir ¬ cuit cubit this season with Magdalenes Magdalene Lady Ashley and Etta H Mr Edwards has had a fair share of success and expects to conclude arrangements with J Naglee Magee Burke to campaign Bellicose Coda Thelma Helm and Dolore Dolores on the northern tracks and may also take Mistleton Mistletoe from the Boots stable San Francisco Examiner Mr Julius Fleischmann Freshman states that the report that he would sell his stable and retire from the turf next season is erroneous He will cam ¬ paign pain a string next year on eastern tracks and that the sale of his horses would simply be a weeding out one The good horses will be re ¬ tained stained and those of inferior class will bo sold soldGalen foldable Galen Brown has leased the running qualities of Diomed Domed a yearling full brother to Olinthus Plinths and Diggs Digs
