LIEBER LIEDER KARL BREAKS DOWN Three American Derby candidates were worked yesterday morning Lieber Libber Karl did the best work and then went lame There is no possible chance of his being a starter Mirthful and Pingree Pongee did excellent wors words Mirthful has a nice way of going and impressed observers that he will be a formidable con tcnrlpr in tomorrows great race Pingrees Ingress k was a surprise He appears to have been a alged aged too much until his race in the Senior Stakes at Harlem demonstrated that he was either a disappointment or needed keener train ¬ ing King Thus far he has improved with racing and strong work His performance yesterday indi Hindi ¬ cates castes that he will be a factor in the Derby DerbyAt Derby At 7 23 a in Lieber Libber Karl Burns up came out As he cantered down the homstretch homestretch he was followed a furlong back by Mirthful with Lit tlefiold tenfold in the saddle Karl was cantered a mile and threequarters treasurers and then given a pipe opening gallop through the back stretch Lit tlefield levied gave Mirthful a couple of miles includ include ¬ ing King an open gallop around the upper turn Karl was pulled up at the half mile ground and Mirthful at the head of the home stretch Trainer Walker attended to get Karl ready for his trial while Littlefield Littered personally looked after Mirthful Mr Schorr Scorer and his son stood in the infield back of the timers stand to time their colt Karl broke at the half He had gone a little over a quarter when Mirthful began his work from the quarter quarterThere quartertone There were plenty of watches out Some were leveled on the Memphis colt and others otherson others on the New Yorker Karl went away rankly at atracing tracing racing speed He stepped the first eighth in 12 the quarter in 25J three furlongs in 37i and andhalf Randal half in 5H He slackened his pace going around aroundthe around the lower turn and the five furlongs and three threequarters treasurers quarters were respectively timed in 1 041 and 1 18 As he turned into the back stretch Time Timemaker Tidemark maker joined him Seven furlongs were cov cove ¬ ered erred in 1 31i and the mile in 1 44i The pace paceimproved improved around the upper turn where each eacheighth searchlight eighth was run in 121 the mile and a quarter quarterbeingcompleted beingcompleted in 210 Down the home stretch stretchTimemaker stretchiness Timemaker Tidemark ran a couple of lengths behind Karl Karlwith Acrolith with the pace perceptibly slower But Karl Karlfinished Marlins finished the journey in 237 and was running runningstraightly straightly and strongly at the end He pulled pulledup pulled up around the turn and Mr Schorr Scorer did not see seehim seething him limp when stopped The colt did didshow sideshow show signs of soreness in his right rightleg right leg when stopped to a walk walked out f it and then became so lame that it a = with difficulty he was returned to his stall stallThere stealthier There the shoe was removed from his right foot footand footman and an examination made His tendons liga lingam ¬ ments aments and pastern were found perfectly clean cleanand cleaned and yet the colt held up his foot tremblingly tremblinglyheld tremblingly held it out as if asking for relief and otherwise otherwiseshowed otherwise showed he was suffering severe pain Mr Schorr Scorer Schorrsaid Scorers said I believe he has broken down I do not notknow Nortek know the exact location of the injury but be ¬ lieve leave it Is in the coffin joint Its too bad His i work was most encouraging I did not want to have him go faster than 242 but Walker said the colt needed stronger work to key him up for a possible delay at the post as well as the race The work was so good I did not know whether to be pleased with it or not I was convinced that if it did not take away his speed he would have a great chance and I was apprehensive that it would injure him but did not fear what has happened He has never before taken a lame step It is possible that Lieber Libber Karls Karl heel is severely bruised bruisedMirthful bruised Mirthful moving along with a sweeping powerful stride began slowly the first eighth occupying 13 and the back stretch quarter 27 Then he went around the upper turn in 251 go ¬ ing King the first furlong of it in 13 and whirling in the home stretch at a 110 clip Littlefield Littered steadied him the next quarter and he rated it nicely in 26i the watches marking 1 18J for the threequarters treasurers He went wide and slowly by the Club H ouse Mouse reaching the furlong post in 1 33 and doing the mile in 1 46 Quickening his stride entering the back stretch he reeled off the next furlong in 131 and the succeeding one in 13 These made the mile and a quarter in 212i Littlefield Littered urged him the last quarter and got a noble response the next furlong be ¬ ing King traversed in 12i and the final one in 13 making the complete trial 238 The final quarter in 25i caused several good judges to say they would look no farther for the winner Then followed animated discussions as to whether Lieber Libber Karl or Mirthful had made the better move During these each trial was care ¬ fully analyzed none of the participants in the arguments being aware that Lieber Libber Karl was in trouble Those who favor sentimental rather than sordid interest in racing expressed the hope that Mirthful would win because his owners A H D H Morris never bet and have sent their horse here to help revive local racing afiairs affairs afiairsGeorge Lafarge George Belknap Belinda expected to have Charley Thorpe up on Pingree Pongee but had to substitute a stable boy It was 9 oclock o'clock when Pingree Pongee came out The cool temperature of the eiirlier weirder hours had been followed by sunshine and heat A cantor and gallop of two miles by the colt was followed by a scrape and rub Then Pingree Pongee went the regular Derby course He ran the first furlong in 13 the first quarter in 261 throe furlongs in 40 and the half in 53J The pace was too slow and Mr Belknap Belinda signaled the boy to go on Then the colt did a furlong in 12i making the five furlongs in 1 06 The pace was reduced again the next eighth and 1 19i was called when thejcolt hectoliter straightened into the back stretch where Osman Oman was stationed to go along with him Covering the Tback Back stretch eighths in 121 and 13i the colt got back to the starting point in 1 45J Then ho went around the turn in 26 making the mile and a quarter in 2lli Half way down the stretch Pingree Pongee was inclined to stop but a few cuts of the whip aroused him and he ended the trip in 2381 Ho pulled up all right and seemed little dis dais ¬ tressed stressed from what he had done His last mile in 1 45 was better than either Karl or Mirthful had done Karls Karl last mile was 1 46Jand Mirth fuls fouls l45i Spectators are now guessing whether Pingree Pongee is1 a work horse or a racehorse Everybody who saw the move regretted that Thorpe had not worked the horse What would he have done with Thorpe up was frequently asked askedBorgia asked Borgia Borg may not start in the Derby His right fore pastern is swollen Mr Boots be ¬ lieves levees it to be the result of a wrench The colt is not lame but the trouble is evident Borgia Borg was in a soaking tub most of the time yester ester ¬ day If the swelling does not increase he may be started wearing an electric bandage on the complaining pastern Mr Boots thought his colt had a royal chance Speaking of it he said He worked a mile Monday in 142 and yesterday he worked a mile and a half in 242 just where I wanted him to go Because he didnt didn't go a mile better than 147 people thought he couldnt couldn't My instructions to Thorpe were to make the furlongs average as nearly as ho could to 113 Bannockburn Bannock was given a lot of galloping He did about three miles on the
