THE CASE OF T BURNS Jockey Burns is liable to become a turf prob probe ¬ lem ylem for reasons set forth as follows in the St Louis Republic RepublicJohn Republic John W Schorr Scorer Son the Memphis turf ¬ men have signed Jockey T Burns the premier lightweight of the western circuit for a period of two years dating from the expiration of their present contract with the boy which runs out next January Schorr Scorer Son will pay Burns a yearly retainer of 8000 under the new con ¬ tract which was drawn up and signed by both parties three or four weeks ago so it is said Burns signed the contract for himself but being a minor he first had to obtain the consent of his parents who reside in the Dominion of Canada This he is said to have done the letter from his parents authorizing him to sign with Schorr Scorer Son being now in the possession of Mr Schorr Scorer SchorrThomas Chartrooms Thomas Hums the Illinois horseman who developed Jockey Burns and turned him over to Schorr Scorer Son at New Orleans also claims the boy for 1899 and 1900 under a contract contain ¬ ing King the signature of Burns parents so it is said Some weeks ago it was announced that Mr Hums had left for his farm in Illinois to spend a couple of days with his family In ¬ stead of going to his Illinois home however Mr Hums boarded a train for the Canadian home of Jockey Burns parents They were delighted at being honored with a visit from the manwho manhole had developed Tom into such a successful jockey and made things exceedingly pleasant for him during his stay In the course of his visit Mr Hums is said to have men ¬ tioned toned what a nice thing it would be for him and Tom to double again The boys parents evidently thought so too for they readily signed a contract on Toms behalf giving Hums first call on the lads services for two years begin ¬ ning Ming next January JanuaryThe January The Hums contract is said to provide for the boy receiving a retainer of only 2500 per an ¬ num numb says he will never ride a horse for Hums un ¬ der deer any consideration even if the courts or Turf Congress should decide that his old employer has first call on him for the coming two years yearsBurns heartburns Burns is sixteen or seventeen years old and cant write his own name He is a bright look ¬ ing King boy and takes good care of himself but his mental welfare seems to have been sadly ne ¬ glected elected His yearly earnings will net 15000 This is three times as much as a United States senator or congressman gets getsMr gets Mr Schorr Scorer senior was seen yesterday by a Republic representative and confirmed the re ¬ port that Jockey Burns had signed witli Willie him for 1899 and 1900 Another party I dont don't care to mention his name also claims the boy for that a splendid offer to ride Filon Dillon dOr doer in the Futurity at Sheepshead Shepherd Bay Tuesday but the colt went lame it is reported George E Smith better known as Pittsburg Pittsburgh Phil wired Mr Schorr Scorer yesterday asking for the boy to ride his colt Ahom Ahem in the same stake He guaranteed the boy 500 and a big present if Ahom Ahem won Smiths colt is a half brother to the game little Ben Brush and is Thought to have an excellent chance to win the Futurity Mel ¬ bourne Bill Barnes also wanted Burns to ride his crack filly Lady in Blue iu the Futurity Jim Rowe is training Lady in Blue for Mr Barnes He says the filly has an excellent chance to finish first in the big stake with a competent rider in the saddle Mr Barnes offered Burns a big riding fee and expressed his willingness to make it worth Mr Schorrs Scorers while to send the boy east if Lady in Blue won but the Memphis turfman Truman had to refuse all offers for the boy He needs Burns to ride his horses at the Fair Grounds
