GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Buckwas record breaking peformance in the Athenian Club Cap Stakes Saturday was a fine example of higk speed sustained over a long distance of ground, but its chief value is in showing how easily the horses of today can wipe out all the long distance records made in the days when sprinting was in the main confined to the two-year-olds. This is not because the horses of today are better, it would be absurd to compare old Buckwa with a Springbok or a Hindoo, but it is because of the marvelous advance in the science of track making and the ceaseless care exercised by the track masters of today in keeping their tracks in condition that enables a horse to travel over their elastic velvety surfaces at the very highest rate their muscular .endowment can propel them. It must be remembered that not only Buckwa eclipsed the long standing Springbok-Preakness record, but that each of his three competitors probably did the same thing, certainly Daisy F. and Veloz did. Eagene Leigh will at once send to the track at Lauisvillo twenty-five head of two-year-olds from La Belle Farm, wh6ro th6y have winteied and been broken They are all colts but one. Mr. Leighs stable will winter at Louisville, and, after takingpart in the Memphis and Louisville meetings, probably go east. The Thoroughbred Records. J. V.
