GOSSIP OF THE TORE. As to certain features and possibilities of the summer meeting at Latonia a dispatch from New Orleans to a Cincinnati newspaper of yesterday says : "Any and all reputable bookmakers who may so desire will be permitted to cut in at the coming Latonia meeting. There has been a disposition in some quarters to question the sincerity of the Latonia people in the announcement made some time ago that there is to be a return to the old-time opening at the Kenton County track next spring, bat Colonel Applegate tonight declared himself as above. The ring will not only be open, but furthermore, an inducement will be held out to bookmakers to hang up their slates at the Kenton County track. The Latonia management have decided to make the fee for booking at their meeting 5 a day, instead of the customary 00 Colonel Applegate says that several eastern bookmakers have given assurance that they will come to Latonia, and he professes to be sanguine that under the new order of things a sufficient number of books will be had to make the return to an open ring a success. Officials for the coming meeting have not yet been selected, but in all probability Morgan Chinn, whose work while he was substituting for Chinn senior last season was quite satisfactory, will be offered the position of starter. "There is more than a remote possibility that Captain Rees will be offered the chief placo in the judges stand. It is, in any event, a certainty, that Colonel Applegate would like to have the former presiding judge at Oakley in the stand, and while nothing has been stated officially to that effect it is reasonably certain that he can havo the position if he cares for it." Roscoe Troxler, who has developed into a most promising lightweight, is in great demand. L. V. Bell, for whom J. J. Marklein is training, J. J. McCafferty, "Pittsburg Phil" and F. V. Alexandre are ail desirous of securing him. The boy will adhere to his determination not to sign a contract until he goes east, where he will ride the coming soason.
