BROOKLYN HANDICAP FAVORITES. The fayorite with Plaudit in the Brooklyn Handicap early batting is Eastin and Larrabies Ben Holladay, named after a Westerner, associated with the early tribulations and triumphs of the western land, where his owners live. Ben Holladay is probably the best horse and is favorite with only 1 to 3 laid against his chances, while it was 3 to 1 against Plaudit. The other starters were Isabey and Han dOr. Lieber Karl carried 122 pounds. Plaudit 117. T. Burns was on the former and Simms on the latter. At the end of a desperate and thrilling drive through the whole of the last quater-I mile Plaudit won by a neck from Lieber Karl, BEN HOLLADAY, B. H, 6, BY HANOVEK MOLLIE L., BY LONGFELLOW. certainly one of the best horses in training in America today. He is by Hanover Mollie L., by Longfellow and from 1 1-2 miles up has proven his groat quality. Over a shorter distance of ground Ben Holladay has been less than certain. He was second, with 121 pounds up, to Ornament 127, in the Brooklyn Handicap last year, the 1 1-4 miles in 2:10. He was one and a half lengths behind at the end. At Coney Island, June 23, he won from Damien, 109, and five others at 1 3-16 miles, with 126 pounds up in 2 :01 and over the same course, August 29, landed the Turf Handicap at 11-4 miles on the turf under 127 pounds, in 2:10; Thomas Cat 103, Jefferson 90 and Semper Ego 113, were behind him. Then at Morris Park, October 4, he won the Morris Park Special, 2 miles, 130 pounds, in 3:33, beating George Keene 117, Warrenton 117, Algol 130 and Latson 117; October 15, the Municipal Handicap, 13-4 miles, 130 pounds, in 3:01i, boating Jefferson 87, Thomas Cat 98, Handball 114 and five others, and October 22, the Morris Park Handicap, 2 1-4 miles, 138 pounds, in 4 :07, defeating a rather poor lot. But Ben Holladay, with 123 pounds, was fifth in the Suburban, one and a quarter miles, of 189S, finishing behind Tillo 119, Semper Ego 106, Ogden 109, and Don dOro 115, and at Coney Island, September 5, finished last with 122 pounds to The Friar 125, Mirthful 111, Buela 98, and White Frost 111 in the Twin City Handicap. In Ben Holladays fouryoars1 of racing ho has performed as follows : Year Age Races 1st 2nd 3rd Unp. Lieber Karl went to the post an overwhelming isabey twenty lengths away, being third. This was on the fourth day of May. Time, 2:09. Seven days later the Clark Stakes was run, only Plaudit and Lieber Karl contesting the event. Lieber Karl was again a favorite, it being only 7 to 20 against him at the post while it was 11 to 5 against Plaudit. The reason for this was that Plaudit carried 127 pounds, ten more than in the Derby, while Lieber Karl carried the same weight ho had carried before. Considering the closeness of the finish for the Derby it appeared that at the weights Lieber Karl should win. But to the consternation of the admirers of Mr. Schorrs good colt, Plaudit won at his leisure by a good four lengths and could evidently have made it a good many lengths more. Time for the mile and a fnrldng, 1:561. From Louisville the two good colts were taken to Cincinnati where they met again in the Oakley Derby, no others starting. Plaudit sarried 127 pounds, Lieber Karl 125. Lieber Karl led on sufferance to the turn for the stretch where Plaudit took a slight lead and with his jockey sitting still won, hard held, by three-quarters of a length, the time for the mile and a quarter being 2:081. That was enough for Mr. Schorr and Lieber Karl. Plaudits superiority was too manifest and they withdrew from the unequal struggle leaving Plaudit to walkover unchallenged for the Buckeye Stakes a few days later. Plaudit had now won four straight victories. His after career for the year was four consecutive seconds. At Latonia, June 9, he ran second to Han dOr for the Derby. It was an extraordinary race and Plaudit was by no means disgraced. It was run in 2:321, Han dOr winning by three lengths, Plaudit carried 127 pounds to his 114, Though Plaudit ran fairly well afterwards it is questionable whether he ever recovered fully from the effects of this desperate race. June 18 he ran second to Pink Coat for the St. Louis Derby, He carried 127 pounds to Pink Coats 107; Bannockburn, 107, Jackanapes, 109 and Equitomo, 94, finishing behind him. Time of the race 2:37. His next start was for the Realization Stakes at Sheepshead Bay, where he ran second to the peerless Hamburg, George Boyd being third and The Huguenot, Handball and Latson unplaced. His last start of the year was at Saratoga August 2, where George Keene beat him a half length for the Hamburg Stakes at a mile over a very heavy track. He was so plainly out of form that ho was retired for the season in the hope that a long rest would bring back the speed that he had possessed through his early western campaign.
