GOSSIP OF THE TURF. 1 Barney Scbreiber is wroth because of tho small fire of the DresB, which reflects on Trainer Dick Williams over the horses sold from the t Schreiber stable which won on-tbe heels of their sale. In a letter from San Francisco Barney says: If my horses ran badly it was the f anlt of the bad riders and not Williams, j If they were sold too cheaply, it was my fanlt, not Williams. I will not keep bad ones if I find them to bu bad. Williams is the best trainer I oyer had. I haTe bad poor recent lack with jockeys. I tried as hard as possible with Woods and Ward, bat their riding: woald not do. Hiding is half the turf battle. Any hard ; worker with good sense and judgment cam train. The borses I sold brought good prices more than they were worth except Eacivan. I sold : him against Williams judgment. If a mistake ! was made charge it to Schreiber. I sold Yemen, I on a trainers advice, for less money, and he was : almost unbeatable for two seasons afterwards. It is easy to make mistakes in horses.and racing. The man who makes the fewest is the wisest man." This is the sort of comment that can always be expected from "the Dutchman" who is generally keen of action and always ready to bear his own burdens. Scbreiber is likely to come east with what he has in time for the Little Sock meeting, where Bert Harte has tha best ones from Woodlands. Theon is the most forward of the bunch and is a good colt. Barney is enthusiastic over Foal Shot, since Gigas performance. She was the first of the Fonl Shots to start and is a good filly. J. Naglee Bark of San Jose, bred her before Schreiber bought her sire. Fonl Shot himself is as good looking a horse as eye ever scanned. The writer saw him at Woodlands yesterday. One is impressed by the general power of the Australian horse. His get can be picked out from the youngsters in the stalls at the farm. He marks them all. All are blocky, with good backs and legs. There are two Sain sucklings already, oat of Caroline Hamilton and Gratitude. Miss Marions yearling sister is a fine looking filly. Daisy Woodruff slipped her foal by Foul Shot. The two-yoar-old half-sister to Lieber Karl by Kingston Daisy Woodruff has bean named Mrs. Branell. She is a beautif ally turned filly, and doing remarkably well after an early touch of distempers. There has not been a really sick colt or filly at the farm during tbe winter. Sain is a massive horse of great substance and beauty. His early get are.large land good looking. In the paddock all heavy with foal and pictures of health are such old racing stars as Derfargilla, Park Ridge, Innocence, Amelia May, Highland, Lemon Blossom and Pennyroyal. Miss Marion is being given a good rest in California. The troublo was that the filly was harried a little too much in her preparation for the California Oaks, which fell to Espionage, February 11. After two bad races tbe filly was turned oat on a farm .near Oakland. She is doing well now and will be big and strong by the time she is shipped east. The injustice of racetrack crowds at intervals is illustrated by just such news items as the following wired to the Tribune Sunday, and bearing on Saturdays racing. "Corrigans colors were roundly hissed in the two-year-old stake event at tho Oakland track yesterday. The Btartera were the Corrigan pair Golden Bale and Sardine and Ella Boland, the Montana illly. with Piggott up. Martin began to ease up Golden Bale in tho laBt furlong, with Ella Boland directly behind, while Sardine, on the outside of Ella Boland, made it appear that 1 1 t j ; : ! I : Martin and Tborpe had Piggott in a pocket, and this incensed tbe crowd, as it looked like a case of double banking. There was great applause wken Piggott dashed up in the stand, the crowd jumping to the erroneous conclusion that he was about to claim a foal. Piggott has no love for Corrigan, but he is a believer in fair play, and told tbe judges he was not fouled, but had plenty of room against the rail, and that Ella Boland bad no chance whatever to boat Golden Rule. But the crowd hissed the Corrigan colors just the same." The Aqueduct officials are also in high feather over entries largely in excess of those of last year, last Saturday nights showing being: Carter Handicap, 7-8 mile, 60; Arverne Stakes, 7-8 mile, 45; Bockaway Stakes, 3 4 mile, 44; Flushing Stakes, 1 1-16 miles, 32; Jamaica Stakes, 5-8 mile, 36; Ozone Stakes, 4 1-2 furlongs, 39; Canarsie Stakes, 4 1-2 furlongs, 40; Rose Stakes, 4 1-2 furlongs, 38. The entries to tbe Carter Handicap were: Brisk, Concord, Boney Boy, Ten Spot, Danfortb, Sensational, Hand- the Crescent City Darby. The prominent three-year-olds are all in good condition. The Barrister has had a slight cold for several days, but has recovered. The Kentuckian galloped a half in 55. He looks well. W. Overton does all that is asked of him, which has not been much. Sea Lion looks a trifle thin. Onomastas, a perfect-looking little horse, is going along slowly. Manuel, a grand looker, takes kindly to bis work. Ordnung is good shape and will be fit when tho Crescent City Derby is run. Leo Planter, a big heavy colt, is being exercised daily, but be is a tough horse to fit. Queen of Song is doing nicely, and is ready right now to go a route. In fact, all of the three-year-olds of class are doing remarkably well, considering tbe supposed setback the bad spell has given them." Every indication points to a very great race meeting at Saratoga next summer, with the stars of the aastern and western tracks making it a scene or hot contention.
