Whats the use? You cant beat the law. It has been passed, and is ironclad, the police are here to enforce it, and why not submit gracefully? We are only losing by opposition and gain nothing in the eyes of the public. In fact, we only hurt ourselves with the public. I havent talked with anybody, but I think the prospects of finishing the season at Oakland are good. I think , we can get the Oakland track if we ask for it." This is the right kind of talk. If a law is unjust, bad or mercenary, test it in the courts. Law fighting outside courts has done more harm to racing than any one of its many bad attachments. T, P. The stable that is generally pronounced to be far ahead of all others in this vicinity is that which Ed Hughes has in charge, including the Kensico Stable horses. .Hughes has followed the principle of taking his horses out every day when it was in any way possible. The consequence is that they are in much harder condition than those that have been coddled up and confined to shed work. It is beginning fo dawn on a good many horsemen that shed work is not as useful as it used to be thought. Apart from the danger of horses injuring themselves on the turns, they seem to go back when they are eventually taken out on the track or on the roads. New York Journal. The Brighton Beach track seems now to be absolutely safe from the encroachments of the ocean. The work undertaken by the Brooklyn Heights Railroad, while not intended primarily to benefit the racing association, will do so to a tremendous extent. The bulkheads, which will extend along something like half a mile of the shore, will be of the most solid character and built on thoroughly scientific principles. These bulkheads will form a rampart between the ocean and the track throughout its entire length. As the street railroad accommodations will be very much improved the track will also be a gainer in this respect.
