NOTES OF THE TURF. W. Martin has gone to Memphis. It is said that he will not be able to ride Onomastus in the Tennessee Derby, as that race is not run until April 18, and the Fleischmann stable will race at Aqueduct, the meeting there opening April 15. The crack jockey has received permission from his employers to remain at Memphis for the first two days of the meeting there, after which he has been ordered to report at the farm, Millstone, N. J. Thomas Nepper, recently trainer for G. C. Bennett, is forming a small stable with which he will campaign on his own account. He has made what looks like a very good start by purchasing the two-year-old winners Lady Contrary and Triaditza from A. H. and D. H. Morris. Jockey Odom will ride no more at New Orleans. Tie has left to visit his parents at Columbus, Ga., for a few days, after which he will report for duty to his employer W. H. Clark. This small rider has improved greatly through his experience at New Orleans. E. F. Sitnms has sold to W. C. Whitney the thoroughbred broodmare Lizzie Montrose for ,560. Lizzie Montrose is the dam of The Ken-tnckian and has by her side a bay filly by New-court. The mare will be sent to La Belle Stud and bred to Meddler. Wewa, the dam of Buckwa, is dead at the home of her owner, Thomas Stevens, near Lexington. Wewa was by Jils Johnson, and died while giving birth to twins, one of which is living. She would have been bred to Top Gallant this season. Having failed to secure Clawson to ride for him during the Memphis meeting, it is reported that G. C. Bennett is now trying for the lightweight rider, McNicklo, now under engagement toN.S. Hall and Co. Farmer Bill Scullys remark after the decision of the Crescent City Derby was. "I have seen Kentucky Colonels trying to beat King Barleycorn all my life but I havenever seen one do it yet." W. F. Hagorman, St. Louis, Mo. The opening odds against Necedah in her winning race at New Orleans Saturday last were 21 to 1. Jockey B. Williams is to ride for the Canadian turfman, Mr. J, E. Seagram this year.
