TO RACE AT LAKESIDE. Secretary Nathansons formal announcement of a fifteen days race meeting, to begin at the Lakeside track a week from next Thursday, came as a pleasant surprise to local admirers of the sport of all sports. To such the local prospects had seemed misty and unpromising since the failure of the legislature to enact a law protecting racing and even the most optimistic were in doubt as to whether they would experience the pleasure of witnessing tie noblest and fleetest of animals in thrilling contention over Chicagos various tracks this year. However, such doubt3 are now pleasiugly dispelled and but a short time 1 is to elapse before the generous rivalry of the thoroughbreds will serve to make Lakeside a scene of animation and gayety. The meeting is to begin May 11 and terminate 1 May 27. From 150 to 200 horses are now at the track or in its vicinity. The mere announcement that the meeting is to take place will bring iu hundreds more. Workmen are now busily engaged in placing the track and its buildings in order. Outside of the fact that . Richard Dwyer is to do the starting no officials have been selected or, at any rate, announced, but that is a detail that will be attended to in | good time and style.
