He was in a good position all the way and at the head of the stretch seemed to be coming away as he pleased, but in the last furlong he tired budly and was lucky to win. He bore in on Ostra and McNickle claimed a foul. The claim, however, was not allowed. Ostra stopped and came again. She does not like a route and at her best is not of much account. Martha Fox could not manage the weight. Heroics ran his race at the poet. Everything considered it was an inferior lot. Mallakawa, place, out; show, out. Ostra, place, 6 to 5; show, 1 to 2. Post 3 minutes. Start good. Won easily at the end after ai early drive; second and third were doing their best. Indian liked the track and ran a good race. When he got to Onota tbe latter quit. Vitatoe rode a good race on the winner. Onota is a speedy youngster, but cannot now go tbe route. She was tired enough to lie down at the finish. Still, the early pace was fast and this probably was tbe principal cause of her quitting. Olive Order came stoutly through the stretch. Barrack suffered from bad handling. Better ridden, he would have been a contender. Hanan took the long route, wobbled all over the colt and did everything but fall off. Overweights— Dr. Tarr, S pounds. Off at the first break to a good start. Won easily at the end; the others were driving. Tbe race was run precisely to suit The Devil. The early pace was very slow and The Devil clearly outsprinted the others through the stretch. His race wai not out of line in the least. The last time he started he was badly messed about and almost thrown. Beauchamp could not do Rifle justice. He was no help whatever to tbe horse who is vety heavy-headed and needs strong handling. The weight seemed to ancbor Al Fresco. The fact that there was no strong pace set handi-capoed him also. Monk Wayman stopped to a walk in the stretch. The Devil, place, 3 to 2. Rifle, place, 3 to 5. He went over the entire course without a mistake, and after Morrissey was unseated on Jack Hayes, OBrien eantered Chenier the rest of the route. Jack Hays was remounted by J. Boyd, brought back to the jump where Morrissey fell off, went over the course correctly and got second money. Kidd took Del Coronado back to the fence, at which he made his mistake, and coming in several minntes after the winner succeeded in getting third place. Johnson tried to take Oxnard over the course but he absolutely refused to jump. Scratohed— 12491 Treopia, 145. Chenier, place, 4 to 5 ; show, ont. Grimes displayed an extraordinary measure of courage for a new beginner in taking a chance to get through on the turn after the break. After that the filly had everything her own way Defender II. could never get np. He was tiring badly at the end and almost lost the place. Vaseline and Vinetta crowded each other in the last sixteenth Tbe former got out of the jam first and slipped through on the rail. Foul was claimed but not allowed. Watch Vinetta; she ran a good race. Oelian was shut off and had to be pulled up on th 3 first turn. There was considerable bumping aud interfering at this point.
