NEW HAWTHORNE RECORDS. It has become a common occurrence to break track records at Hawthorne, and yesterday was no exception to the rule. On the contrary, three — the five and one-half furlongs, the mile and the nine fui longs marks— were smashed. Frargible, Boney Boy and Rifle were the horses to set the new marks, and the latter two were driven to the limit ih order to win their races, whih Frangible won without much trouble. The nine furlongs event was a handicap, and Secretary Hany Knbl deeervfs to be corncli-mented on the way he distributed the weights and the magnificent contest tbe race furnished. There were but six starters, but at no stage of the batting was there lese than 3 to 1 offered against any horse, and, goiDg to the post, it was 34 to 1 and take your pick between Kifia and Al Fresco. -Jolly Roger and Kriss Kringle were at 5 to 1 each. Harry Nutter was quoted at 44 to 1. after being backed down from 8 to 1 and The Devil was held at sixes. It wae a horse race from the start and fur-nif hed one of the most stirring finishes ever seen at tbe Hawthorne track. Kriss Kiiogle set tbe pace, and it wae a hot one too. He broki-fifth but went to the front passing the stand and stepping the fiist half in 491 seconds had a lead of about two lengths. Jolly Roger was second and Rifle, who was close to the rail and saving every bit of grannd possible, was third. This was the order the entire route until the stretch was reached. Here Jolly Roger shot to the fiont like a flash and for an instant was a full length in tbe lead and appealed to be winning. On tbe turn Rifle wa3 badly interfered witb, but Everett had his wits about him and when he saw he could not get through on the inside lost no time in taking Rifle up and -rojng around. When Rifle eventually got straightened away he began to gain on Jolly Roger. Gradually and slowly, but surely, the big long striding son of Maxim — Napa crept toward the front. He get to Joliy Roger abuut forty yards out but the latter had something left and, displajing bull dog courage, hung on for his life. Silvers, who rode the colt, could not help him much, while on the other hand Everett was doing great work on Rifle. Tbe consequence was that in the very last stride Ritle poked his nose iu front and got the verdict. The same powerful tinish Everett put up ou Rifle would have won on either iiorse. it wae truly a grand race and the time, l:52t. clips a tialf second from the track record which was made hy Imp on Seprembsr 12, 1898, with 109 pounds up. Boney Boys track record breaking performance came in tbe last race of the day and it was i eihaps tbe most popular win of the meeting. This iron son of the iron horee Biitzeu has many friends ami as he is always at a good price in the odds they get good letuins for their friendship. Evidently owner Bradley knows what he is h» ii ■. in starting him so often for Boney Boy ran the bast race of his career, and although the official timers huLg out 1:394 for the mile there were more than a score of outside timers who caught tbe race in 1 :39 flat. Yitatoe rode Boney Boy and handled him to perfection. He is a horse that runs best from I behind and seems to ba an easy one to place, bat somehow or other he has baen sent to tbe front early in most of the races in which he has been beaten. Vita toe had evidently mads a note of this and never made a move in the first five furlong? of the journey. He allowed, first, Gaesa Me. then Serrano, and later Tenby to take a crack , at paremaking, and after they were through J sent Boney Boy along. When the stretch was reached he had a lead of nearly a length over 8errano. The later faltered on the turn, but came again, and at the eighth post got to Boney Boys throatlatch and it sesmed for an instant that he Lad the Bradley gelding beaten. In the last sixteenth the pair had it hammer and tongs and Boney Boy, untouched bythe whip, captured the money and the new record. Rome Respass is making quite a record for himself. He starts few horses but it seems I that each one be sends to the post is fit and 1 ready to run the race of its life, and they generally come home with the purse. Abe Furst was Respass candidate yesterday and although , he went back in the betting from 3 to 5 to even money he won as he pleased. Bishop Poole, who siemstohave more than 1 his share of bad luck, at last won a race. It I was with Frangible in the initial five and a half furlong dash for two-year-olds and was a very lucky win. The colt was on tbe rail swinging • into tbe stretch and was in a bad pocket, but he maneged to get through at the end and won . rather handily in track record time. Lillian Reed, a new arrival, won the fourth raca easily from King Bermuda, and Moroni had a picnic with the hi rses be was against in the fifth event. He was never extended and won off by himself. The judges did not like McNicklee ride on King Beimuda, and he has been suspended pending an investigation.
