HAWTHORJfE RACING. Hawthorne had for its racing feature yesterday a steeplechese over the short course. It proved an easy thing for Chenier, who has developed into a good one at the cross country game. De Sota was scheduled to ride Chenier, and with him up the ring toon liberties with the horse and laid 7 to 5 against him. OBrien has satisfactorily ridden Chenier in all of nis races heretofore Bnd Judge Bees could see no reason why he should not ride him in this. Consequently De Sota was taken down and OBrien substituted. When this change was announced in the betting ring it created a panic, and in an instant Cheniers price fell to 4 to 5. He was much tbe best at the weights and won running away. Jack Hajes, with 160 pounds on his back, ran a good, honest race and finished second. There were no close finishes during the afternoon and the racing was very tame. Favorites fared badly only two, Chenier and Bacivan winning. Louis Ezell and bis friends cleaned up a neat sum on the first race. They backed Belle of the Glen from 7 to 1 down to 4 to 1 and she won handsomr ly. The second race went to Norma Taylor. She was well backed, got a running start, and barely lasted long enough to stagger home in front of Jim McClevy. Pan Charm, at 2 to 1, easily took care of the fourth race and Clara Wonley. a 25 to 1 shot, captured the fifth event The field was at the post almost half an hoar in the Clara Wooley raca. The judge tapped the bell after one of the false bre-iks notifying the starter to send them away at tbe next attempt. It happened that the very next break was a good one. Bacivan won the closing three-quarter mile race from flag fall to finish. The entry of Bobert Bonner will be refused in the future at Hawthorne. Jockey T. Bnrns was a visitor at the track. Mr. Vitatoo has located his son at St. Louis and yesterday wont after him.
