, GOSSIP OV THE TUKF. Most people who pay attention to horse matters will recall the fact that in 1896 there was foaled on V. L. Kirkmans place, near Nashville, Tenn., a perfectly white thoroughbred colt: The foal was regarded as a freak, especially as its sire, Palestine, ia a chestnut horse, while its dam, Black Girl, is a jet bleck mare. Mr. Eirkman has had numerous opportunities to sell the colt at a good price, but still owns him, and will send him over to St. Louis about the first of September to race for some of the purses offered by the Fair Grounds Association. From the time the foal first saw the light up to last spring its coat was snow whte, with the exception of its eyes, which were black, and the tips of its ears, which were red. The colt was registered under the name of White Cross, and raced at the Nashville fall meeting a couple of times in his two-year-old form, but finished in each instance outside the money. White Cross has been gradually changing his color binco last February, and it is thought that by next February be will be es intensely back as he has been intensely white. Following the terrible cold spell, F brunry 13. 1899. the colt baa been turning black; but whether tha severity of the weather is in any manner responsible for thb change is not known. However, about that time black spots b?gan to appear on his quarters, and these have bepn growing rapidly ever since. Other black spots have appeared on his neck nd shoulders, and his ears have turned a dark brown. His tail, which was white, is fast changing to a glossy blck, and indications of a similar change are visible all over the b dy. A number of leirned men have exami ed tho colt, but not one of them has offered any explanation of the remarkable change now taking place in the colts color. Whio Cross has ben in training at Mr. Kirkmans farm Mnce last Mav. acd hi" best trials include a quart-r in 25, a half in 12 and thro-quarters in 1:18. H- is about sixteen hands high.
