CONEOY CH C BY 3T LEONARDS LADY INVEHCAULD CONBOY Until Conroy was credited with the unprece ¬ dented feat for a threeyearold of winning the Brooklyn Handicap his chance for American Derby honors was lightly estimated But the decision of the Brooklyn made it plain that he was in the first flight and sure to be a formid ¬ able factor if his owners should decide to send him out to try for the chief threeyearold race of the American turf It is reported that he has become slightly lame from stepping on a stone recently but it is nothing of serious im ¬ port and he will probably be sound and well long before the day on which the big race is to be decided decidedConroy Conroy was a good twoyearold He did not ripen early and was not sent to the post until August 29 when he was started in the Dash Stakes five furlongs at Sheepshead Bay The starters and weights were Bellario 104 pounds Conroy 108 Elizabeth M 107 Far Rockaway 127 Lady Schorr 124 King Peppor 110 Add 102 Cresson 104 Drogheda 104 and June Gayle 115 Conroy did not win but he made an excellent impression by running second to the good colt Bellario in 100 beaten two lengths and finishing a head before the fast filly Elizabeth M This promising debut he confirmed two days later by winning the Sapphire Stakes at five and onehalf furlongs done in the fast time of 106 The starters were Conroy 109 pounds Bellario 125 Six Shooter 109 King Lief 125 Sharpshooter Cornelian and Advocator 108 each and Guess Work 105 Conroy won handily by a length and a half Bellario defeating Six Shooter a length for second money Conroy was the favorite at 6 to 5 5So So far Conroy had raced with substantial allowances of weight off but when he ran for the Autumn Stakes September S he showed that he could carry high weights and run fast Only four started Longshoreman 108 pounds Conroy 122 Far Bockaway 129 and Smile 108 Tod Sloan rode Longshoreman in masterly fashion and landed him the winner by a length with Conroy second a head in front of Far Bockaway Time for the six furlongs 1 14 It was an excellent race marked by heavy bet ¬ ting and fine jockeyship His next start was for the Great Eastern Handicap September 8 In this he finished next to last because Spencer eased him up in the stretch when he found him to be surely beaten The race was won by Bean Gallant 107 pounds in the exceedingly fast time of 112 Dublin 113 finishing second and Far Bockaway 121 third The other starera were Smile 109 Autolight 105 Beau Ormonde 104 AlardScheck123 Dr Barlow 103 Blues 125 Colonel Padden 99 Lady Schorr 115 and Conroy 110 Conroy was third into the stretch and could have finished in the front division beyond doubt doubtConroys Conroys next start was at Gravesend Sep ¬ tember 15 in the Holly Handicap at five and a half furlongs The starters and weights were Conroy 115 pounds Dublin 113 Bellario 126 Water Color 117 Bilverdale 110 Fake 105 Autolight 100 Beau Gallant 117 Princess Pep ¬ per 103 Anecdote 100 and June Gayle 100 It was no slight performance to lead this fine field to the winning mark yet Conroy was first in a tremendous finish in which the order was Conroy Dublin Bellario Water Color and Silverdale all heads apart and doing their utmost The time was 1 07 exceedingly fast for the slow Gravesend course After this race it was almost a month before ho was started again This was at Morris Park October 13 Then he went to the post for the Champagne Stakes at seven furlongs The starters were Garry Hermann 117 pounds Smile 107 Water Color 125 Conroy 122 Advocator 107 Hand ¬ work 117 and Criterion 112 Garry Hermann won by a head from Smile ho three lengths be ¬ fore Water Color Conroy was a tired fourth not being at concert pitch for such a long race He led for most of the route but tired in the stretch drive The time was fast 127 127His His last race as a twoyaarold was for the White Plains Handicap This was also at Morris Park over the Eclipse Course October 20 The starters wero Conroy 116 pounds Garry Hermann 123 Silverdale 116 Alard Scheck 123 Water Color 119 and Maximus 105 Conroy won by a length and a half from Garry Hermann he leading Silverdale a length The time was 1 lls and Conroy went into win ¬ ter quarters with flying colors and the well earned reputation of being one of the good two yearolda of the year His record of this year is of too recent achievement to require recount ¬ ing He is said to be one of the most beauti ¬ fully turned and aristocratic appearing colts seen in many years and that he is a grand racer none can doubt It is to be hoped that he will be seen at the post when fifty thousand people will gather at Washington Park to hail the winner of the American Derby of 1901
