j I WATNAMOTJJEN The Commoner was a fine race horse in his day cud tbo showing of his first and second crops of younsters WBS cf such en impressive character that Gen W H Jackson has recently added him to the list of Belle Meado sires at a cost of 15000 He belongs to that strongest of American blood lines which beginning with Glenooo comes straight down through Vandal Virgil and Hindoo to Hanover tho sire of The Commoner CommonerOne One of the best representatives of The Com ¬ moner is the filly ainamoinen which is next to Endurance by Bight perhaps the best two yearold filly in the West and whoso portrait ia presented in this issue She is tho property of Talbot Bros for whom she has olrecdy won four races out c f the six tiroes she has gone to tho post and in doing so has established for herself the well earned reputation of being in the front rank of her age and sex sexWainemoinen Wainemoinen made her first bow to the pub ¬ lic at Memphis April 6 in tbo Ardello Stakes a half milo dash for two yearold fillies The starters were Wainsmoinen Drummond The B ston Marquo Autumn Leaves Tennie F Evening Star The Fashion Kentucky Muddlo Sallie Green Beep and Lady Bird All carried 115 pounds Drnmmond by virtue of having al ¬ ready won a good race was the favorite at 3J to 1 wbilo Wainamoinen went to the post at 8 to 1 having been backed down from 8 to 1 Bid ¬ den by J Miller she was first away from the pest and showed the way to her opponents from start to flnith and won frcm Diummond in a sharp drive by a good half length The Boston binping up in third piece a length behind Drnmmond The time was 50 seconds which ranks as fust over the sandy Memphis track This was her only start ft the Memphis meet ¬ ing and from there she was taken to St Louis LouisAt At this city she was started for a purse May 9 over a heavy track and made a bad showing no doubt being short Tho field was made up of Helen Print 110 Miss Dora 115 Balance All II 115 Etbelyne105 Wainamoinen 115 8aale 105 end Margery Long ICO Helen Print was a 9 to 10 favorite aid V ainamoinen second choice at 13 to 5 The latter led to tbo stretch and then quit leaving Helen Print to win with Miss Dora second and Balance All II third the time for tho five furlongs being 105 She made a vastly different showing May IS at four and a half furlongs and over a fast track She had up 115 pounds and her opponents were Mies Dora 108 Wakita 103 King Daly 105 H L Cole man 106 Baby Dixcn98 Bot96Saale93and Potheen 96 Well ridden by C Combs she came with a fine rush through the stretch and won by a neck and could have won by open daylight Miss Dora was second and Wakita third and tbo time was 55i 55iMay May 16 she went to the post for the Debutant Stakes The field was Wainamoinen 118 pounds Helen Print 115 Flora Pomona 118 Barouche 115 Wakita 115 Schwalbe 110 Zo raide115 Lacrimae105 Vies Dora 118 Bal ¬ ance All II 118 and Jnngfrau 110 Barouche was sent down from Chicago in the belief that she could capture the stake and Cay wood went along to ride her but the barren honor of fonrtk place was all that rewarded the venture Wai ¬ namoinen ran into the lead aoon after the stark and although closely pressed at all stage showed great speed and courage and won by a balf length with Huffmans fast filly Helen Print at hor flank and Flora Pomona third two lengths away It WEB an excellent race and done in fast time 55 seconds Some claimed that Helen Print ran the best race but sack does not appear to be ihn rppoon th facof thft I CONTINUED ON SECOND PAQB WAINAMOINEN Continued from First Page record She was second into the stretch with three pounds in her favor and could not make up any ground worth mentioning But she ia herself a fine filly and likely to win her share of races over the Chicago tracks this summer summerWainamoinons Wainamoinons next race was for the Lake ¬ side Stakes at Washington Park June 25 where the host she could do was to rnn fourth This was the wonderful race in which Endurance by Right smashed the track record by running five furlongs in one minute fiat with 122 pounds up Sweet Billie was second with 115 pounds up and Sister Jeanie 115 beat Wainamoinen 120 a half length for third money Flora Pomona Pronta and Doreen finishing behind her Her Park June 27 a last race was at Washington dash of four and a half furlongs for a purse which she won in 5iJi seconds with Eddie Busoh second and Magi third She had up 110 pounds Eddie Buseh 108 Magi 103 Sir Oliver 108 Oclawaha 107i Dodio S 105 Sweet Bil lie 110 Red Hook 106 and The Four Hundred 103 from which it can be seen that the race was of more than ordinary merit Wainamoinen is a good one destined to still greater successes than ahe has yet achieved
