MUDDY AT HAWTHOBNE Tha Hawthorne track yesterday was still in as bad a condition as it possibly could ba the sunshine making it a shade stickier than usual Mud larks of course held high carnival and cloee finishes were a rarity Even with clear weathor for a fow days tho course can hardly be got into any kind of fair shape until nezt week The card offered was a featureless one and the sport was very tame throughout throughoutStrangest Strangest took the mile and a half race with ¬ out any trouble Daviason laid far out of it with him for the first mile and then gradually moved him up to the loader Oznard whom he caught at tho last eighth post aud passed easily winning by six lengths Dan Cupid closed up fast in tha last eighth and bsat out the tiring Oznard a length for second placa The latter was so tired in the last eighth that he awervod into tha insido rail Hermancia ran a much improved race over hie poor showing of savoral days ngo and was right thoro for over a milo and a quarter Banglo is stale and sour and will not race raceIf If You Dare turned the tables on Educate which beat him handily last Tuesday at the same distance by defeating her easily by four lengths Small Jack was responsible in a great measure for tho fillys defeat as he carried her almost to exhaustion in tho first quarter aud sho had little left to finish with Educate lad by three lengths at the half and by one to the last eighth where eho tired and If You Dare closed up on her They had a sharp tilt for a short space when If Yon Dare draw away Ural finished five lengths back of Educate Small Jack quit badly in tho last quarter quarterThe The only real closo finish of tho day took place in the fourth raca whan Prairio Dog beat Sortie in a desperate drive by a neck After Pupil had led by a short margin for tho first quarter Sortia assumed what looked like a win ¬ ning lead but Gormloy foolishly took him into tho bad going along the inside rail in the last quarter spoiling his chances In tho last eighth Prairio Dog camo strongly and beat him out under severe punishment St Bluff under a weak ride ran a fair race finishing third five lengths back Isaboy thought to be a good thing ran a dull race and showed little spaed t any part of the contest Pupil tirod and quit badly when a furlong out outThe The days opener a dash of five and a half furlongs for twoyearolds was won by Burnett Wallace but it is doubtful if ho would have reached tha wiro first had Digby Ball mot with any racing luck in the early part of the flight Bnruott Wallace was badly outrun up to the head of tho stretch but camo with a rush in tho last sixteenth and won under strong urging by two lengths from Digby Bell which bsat Hnzzah a head for second place Digby Bell ran a remarkably good race and made up much ground from a poor beginning Pompey showed quito a turn of speed for four furlongs and then retired Crescent City thought by many to have a good chance ran away for almost a mile spoiling whatever chance ha might have had hadThe The other twoyearold race tho fifth a dash of six furlongs went to Ben Vincents good filly Amiranto which easily picked up the leader Miracle II at the last eighth post and then came away winning by threequarters of a length from Harry Wilson which closed with a rush and brought tho winner to a drive to stall off his bid in the closing strides Miracle II was third three lengths away but Wyath would have beaton him in another stride The latter finished stoutly and will undoubtedly show to good advantage on a dry track trackLittla Littla Duchess II carried off the purse in the last race without much trouble after lead ¬ ing by a good margin from tho first quarter post She won by thrae and a half lengths quite easily from the fast cloiing Georgo Lee he baatiag Zach Phelps eight for second place George Lea closed a big gap while coming down tho last quarter but was not good enough to beat the winner Chauncey Fisher ran well for seven furlongs aa did Rassslas but both fell away baaten in the final quarter quarterBangles Bangles poor showing in the long distance race may bo accounted for from the fact that he is baing schooled over the jumps aud his work through the infield must have cortainly dulled hia spied in yesterdays race This was evidently known to a number of the bookiea who laid as high as 7 to 1 against him
