GOSSIP OF THE TURF Dave Gideon returned from West Baden the first of last week andafter a short visit to his farm at Holmdel N J expressed himself as well pleased with the condition of his yearlings There are nine of them at Hblmdel and Mr Gideon has engaged them in all the big events for jiext year He de ¬ clares that nothing biit the big stakes will satisfy him when he takes his horses to the races next spring Speaking about Holmdel a breeding farm which has but few equals in this country the story of how John Daly and Dave Gideon came into pos ¬ session of it has probably never been told When these popular gentlemen broughtout His Highness they believed they owned the best twoyearold of that year and in that they were not mistaken During his twoyearold form His Highness through Ms winning of rich stake events and what his own ¬ ers wagered on his chances netted Messrs Gideon and Daly 170000 which was kept in a lump sum until the end of the season With this sum they purchased the beautiful farm at Holmdel Many improvements were made at the place whey they i ll Ilia rf r T l nmonrol nmonrolorfHrVJIS orfHrVJIS orfHrVJIShad had the old oil lamps about ihe farm removed and an electric plant substituted I want the farm to look like Fifth areruo in the night time was tio way jlr Daly put it at the time Recently Mr Daly decided to retire from the breeding business and Mr Gideon bought out his interest paying his 85000 just half the original purchase price priceJudge Judge Burke in the Daily America of December 31 has this to say about the starting machine machineIt It will be good news to those owners who still fear that the starting mashine will prove a failure to learn from such a practical man as Mr Porter that he considers the starting gate the best way to start horses and that the new rule allowing ap ¬ prentices to ride for one year with a five pounds allowance had done a great deal of good It is amusing to read Mr Porters account of his feel ¬ ings after having stood to win 100 on Matchbox for the St Leger and finally becoming nervous over it he hedged against the colt only to see another y Throstle swoop down and beat the pair Heavy betting trainers do not last long on the English or any other turf The natural emoluments of their vocation are considered ample compensation for their work Charles Hughes who handled Garry Hermann during the latters twoyearold career is wintering in Lexington He has charge of the string of H M Ziegler the wellknown Cincinnati turfman The horses are quartered at Kingston Stud The string is made up of beans horse has been re ¬ tired from active campaigning on the turf and will pass the rest of his days in retirement Ho has served his masters well As a yearling Dolando did not bring a 50 bid at one of the Gravesend sales Then his owner B G Westmore began to train him and he showed a fair amount of speed but he soon i went wrong in the knees and had to be turned out When a threeyearold John Meehan of beanery r faine was a part owner and Dolando soon became inown astho beef and beans champion When yer lie ran alLPari Bow was aboard of him both i at the track and in the pool rooms Later he was purchased by Thomas Welsh and last year he ran successfully in the name and colors of Frank FarrelL FarrelLWord Word comes from Lexington Ky that Capt S S Brown of Pittsburg owner of Garry Hermann will breed the son of Esher to a limited number of mares nexUspring if he follows tMe advice of Charles Hughes who trained Garry Hermann when he was best Mr Hughes said in a recent c6nversation that Garry Hermann on top of being a grand race ¬ horse had the individuality and thepedigree for a successful sire and even if he could be trained again there was no reason why he should not be stinted to a few mares He cited the fact that both Isidor and Ogden made seasons in the stud and then came on and won good races Ogden taking two in one day Another thing said Mr Hughes very few people know that I2ddie Jones in the Burns Waterhouse string and winner of the Winter Handi ¬ cap a mile and a quarter in 204 was bred to ten or a dozen mares and won both before and after ¬ ward Mr Hughes intends to advise Captain Brown to try the experiment with Garry Hermann IiT feiiouiltiti ci tLo iroiOit cich7irc tlifrTin foran race track the San Francisco Examiner ot December 29 has this to Say The New California Jockey Club has purchased the land nov occupied by the Tanforan race track or 82500 This is at the rate of 750 per acre The Jockey Club now owns both the Tanforan and In gleside tracks with all improvements and has a very advantageous lease of the property at Emery ¬ ville with an option to purchase at a good price The probable object of the purchase of Tanforau was to do away with the obligation to race in San Maieo County Tinder the lease and the various subleases from thei Western Turf Association and the San Francisco Jockey Club and originally from the South San Francisco Land Company it was obligatory to race thirty days at Tanforan It is considered that the sport at Oakland pays better because the attendance is greater than at Tan ¬ foran The first declarations from the Crescent City Derby were due last Thursday and the following were out at 5 each Electrolytic Hayward Hunter Blue Mantle George Ritchey Hopefield Pepper Dick All About Jollify Postillion Katherine C Lightfinger The Four Hundred Puryear J Pat ¬ rick Heno Thirtythree remain in at 23 each among them in addition to Lord Quex the best generally at the local track including the Bennett trio Ed Austin Aladdin and Herodiade Sam Hildreths McChcsney John Maddens pair Pente ¬ cost and Slipthrift and G W Cooks Merriment The second and final declarations are due February 22 with 20 if left in after that date Jockey Winnie OConnor is going to spend a week or two at Haggins ranch resting up Ho thinks he has been riding in bad luck and complains that all the other jockeys have been roughing him OConnor is a past master at that sort of thing him ¬ self and if he has been getting the worst of it the other boys have been merely paying back in kind It might be well to observe here that a jockey can not set upt all night playing poker and expect to1 ride gilt edged races the next afternoon San Fran ¬ cisco Examiner James Loughman the wellknown local turfman who acted as paddock judge at the various tracks hereabout last year was stricken down with paralysis of the right side on New Years day while on a visit to the Harlem track He has been taken to Dr Harveys private sanitarium His condition is thought to be serious Ered Walbaum has made all arrangements to spend the winter abroad He will sail on Saturday January 11 and after a trip up the Mediterranean ho VH time himself tosee some racing at Lincoln andthe GrandNational at Liverpool Then back toAmerica
