GOSSIP OF THE TUKF Josio Gs brilliant achievements have attracted j the attention of Clarence Mackay of New York He has wired his agent E White to interview the 1 owner of this smart filly and have him put a price 1 on her This will be done as soon as Mr Gibson i the owner can be located By many she is con ¬ ceded to be the best filly that has been seen in Cal ¬ ifornia in many years In all of her races except ¬ ing that of last Thursday she has won with such l s capable of nothing before ever having pushed her In the Supreme Court of New York recently John T Eagan one of the stockholders in the Sara ¬ toga Racing Association made an application for a i peremptory writ of mandamus to compel the asso ¬ ciation to exhibit to him the books and accounts s showing the secrets of the organization and the e vouchers showing the disbursements for salaries is and printing etc before he votes It is alleged 1 i that Eagan has proof that much money has been squandered in various ways by the association Lawyer Gooden who represents the association opposed the motion and said an inspection of the books had not been denied Eagan but Secretary Knapp had not felt that he was at liberty to permit him to go through the books and vouchers until the Board of Directors had met and considered that subject Justice Dugro adjourned the matter for one week Concerning Conroys engagements in England Judge Burke in Daily America of January 7 has this to say In looking over Conroys engagements in Eng land the writer found that he was in three stakes there the value of which amounts to more than 115000 And this not including the Gold Cup Alox andra Vase and such other stakes as will close to day both in this country and in England Mr Vos burgh acting as the English Jockey Clubs agent in the matter The Gold Cup about two miles and a half is worth 15000 in added money and there is a condition that the cup is of the value of 5000 Nominations to this race may be made sealedup to be opened after the Oaks has been run Sealed fore the expiration of the time of opening may re main unopened No doubt the fact that Conroy had already been engaged in the three stakes men tioned had much to do with his being sent abroad Henry Ziegler one of Cincinnatis most promi nent owners of thoroughbred horses has returned from Lexington where he spent the last ten days Mr Ziegler brings the information that Ogden which was one of a lot of highbred stallions that reached Lexington a few days ago is a very sick sickhorse horse Ogden was taken to Hamburg Place and a veterinarian called in immediately after his ar ¬ rival said Mr Ziegler He is a very sick horse Madden only recently refused 15000 for him There is more activity among the breeding farms than ever before I did not make any purchases princi pally because I did not see what I wanted I am looking for a highclass youngster but found none that suited I visited all the great breeding farms and it is truly a great sight My horses at the Kingston Farm were in excellent condition With Mr Ziegler during this conversation sat a gentle man from the east who imparted the information that Tod Sloan will soon be given a license by the English Jockey Club but that he will ride in this country and probably his own horses Cincinnati Commercial Tribune Rome Respass of Cincinnati has purchased of T H Stevens Walnut Hall Farm near Lexington Ky the twoyearold chestnut colt by Wadsworth Modjeska and the twoyearold bay colt by Wadsworth Clara K Price G000 for the two The one out of Modjeska is a brother to Merito and the other is a brother to Bristol The dams of both have produced a number of good horses Henry Ziegler of Cincinnati had offered 3500 for one of these colts Bermuda the race horse which Byron McClelland pronounced the best horse ho ever trained not excepting the great Henry of Navarre has been sold by W J Tracy of Lexington Ky to parties in southern Kentucky for a private price McClel land paid 5050 for Bermuda when he was a two yearold and won about 35000 in stakes and purses with him He sired King Bermuda Francis Mc Clelland and other good horses after retiring to the stud There is to be a new breeder in the Blue Grass regions Joseph Redmond well known in the east and elsewhere as the trainer for the late Marcus Dasy and for Capt S S Brown has purchased a farm in Bourboun county near Paris Ky and will stock it with runners The farm cost Mr Redmond 19000 and contains about 130 acres of fine blue grass land
