GOSSIP OF THE TUKF In a recent interview with Captain Rees anent the reported friction existing between him and Edward Corrigan the Captain had this to say The most cordial relations exist between Mr Corrigan and myself as has always been the case There is no track in the country at which I would rather work than Hawthorne or any other that might be controlled by Mr Corrigan So far from that if I should reconsider my determination not to go on the stand at the Chicago track after my engagement at Memphis it will be simply out of re ¬ gard for Mr Corrigan I know he is a good man to work for There never has been any one connected with racing in this country who is more a stickler for a strict conformity to rules than the oldtime Master of Hawthorne and that suited mo exactly As far as I know he never interfered with any track official in the discharge of his duties There cer ¬ tainly was never any friction between us I do not want to officiate at Hawthorne or any other track though after the Memphis meeting I intend to build a summer residence in the mountains near Pittsburg and I intend to devote whatever time I can take from my other business interests to super ¬ vise the work on it That is all there is to my de ¬ clination to accept my old official position at Haw ¬ thorne I intended to build last year but my race track duties stood in the way My relations with Mr Corrigan and also with Mr Fitzgerald are the thepleasantest pleasantest The news that a 90000 appropriation had been made by the United States Senate and a promise of 50000 additional by the city of Charleston with which to boom the exposition gives great hopes for racing in the future there The sport has been for the last week not up to the expectations which the management expected it to bo They figured that by the middle of this month everything would be on the boom order and the purses which had been cut down to 150 would again be raised to the original sum advertised to be given away The crowds are expected to increase from now on
